Amr bin Al? Ab? Hafs narrated to us, he said I heard Yahy? bin Sa??d, he said: ?I asked Sufy?n ath-Thawr? , Shu?bah, M?lik, and Ibn Uyaynah about a man who is not reliable (Thabt) in ?ad?th, and someone comes and asks me about him, and they said: ?Inform [others] against him that he is not reliable?.?
وَحَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ أَبُو حَفْصٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيَّ، وَشُعْبَةَ، وَمَالِكًا، وَابْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الرَّجُلِ لَا يَكُونُ ثَبْتًا فِي الْحَدِيثِ، فَيَأْتِينِي الرَّجُلُ، فَيَسْأَلُنِي عَنْهُ، قَالُوا: «أَخْبِرْ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِثَبْتٍ»
  یحییٰ بن سعید نے کہا : میں نے سفیان ثوری ، شعبہ ، مالک اور ابن عیینہ سے ایسے آدمی کے بارے میں پوچھا جو حدیث میں پور ی طرح قابل اعتماد ( ثقہ ) نہ ہو ، پھر کوئی آدمی آئے اور مجھ سے اس کے بارے میں سوال کرے؟ تو ان سب نے کہا : اس کے بارے میں بتا دو کہ وہ پوری طرح قابل اعتماد نہیں ہے

Ubayd Allah bin Sa??d narrated to us, he said, I heard an-Na?r saying: ?Ibn Awn was asked about the ?ad?th of Shahr and he was standing at the threshold of the door, so [Ibn Awn] said: ?Indeed they criticized Shahr, indeed they criticized Shahr?. Muslim, may Allah have mercy on him, said ?He means- the tongues of men were busy criticizing him?.?

Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Quhz?dh, from the people of Marw, narrated to me, he said Al? bin Husayn bin W?qid informed me, he said Abd Allah bin al-Mub?rak said, I said to Sufy?n ath-Thawr?: ?Indeed Abb?d bin Kath?r, about whose condition you are aware, when he related [narrations] he introduced a grave matter- do you believe that it should be said to the people ?Do not take from him?? Sufy?n said: ?Indeed!? Abd Allah [bin al-Mub?rak] said: ?So when I was in an assembly and Abb?d was mentioned there, I praised him regarding his D?n and said: ?Do not take from him.? Muhammad said, Abd Allah bin Uthm?n narrated to us, he said, my father said, Abd Allah bin al-Mub?rak said: ?I ended up in an assembly of Shu?bah, and he said: ?This is Abb?d bin Kath?r so be warned against him.?

Al-Fa?l bin Sahl narrated to me, he said, I asked Mu?all? ar-R?z? about Muhammad bin Sa??d whom Abb?d transmitted from, so he informed me about what ?s? bin Y?nus said: ?I was at his door and Sufy?n was with [Muhammad bin Sa??d], then when he came out I asked [Sufy?n] about him. So he informed me that he was a liar.?

Muhammad bin Ab? Att?b narrated to me, he said Aff?n narrated to me, on authority of Muhammad bin Yahy? bin Sa??d al-Qatt?n, on authority of his father, he said: ?We do not see the righteous more false in anything than they are regarding ?ad?th?. Ibn Ab? Att?b said: ?So Muhammad bin Yahy? bin Sa??d al-Qatt?n and I met and I asked him about it and he said on authority of his father: ?You will not see the people of good (Ahl ul-Khayr) more false in anything than they are regarding ?ad?th.? Muslim said: ?He was saying that falsehood flows upon their tongues although they do not intend to lie?.

Al-Fa?l bin Sahl narrated to me, he said Yaz?d bin H?r?n narrated to us, he said Khal?fah bin M?s? informed me, he said: ?I entered upon Gh?lib bin Ubayd Allah so he began dictating to me ?Mak?h?l narrated to me this? and ?Mak?h?l narrated to me that?. So he prepared to answer the call of nature and stood up, then I looked in his notebook and in it was ?Ab?n narrated to me, on authority of Anas? and ?Ab?n on authority of so-and-so?. So I abandoned [listening to his ?ad?th] and stood up [to leave]?. I heard al-Hasan bin Al? al-Hulw?n? saying: ?I saw in one of the books of Aff?n a ?ad?th of Hish?m Ab?l-Miqd?m meaning a ?ad?th of Umar bin Abd il-Az?z. [In it was written] ?Hish?m said: ?A man said to be Yahy? bin so-and-so narrated to me, on authority of Muhammad bin Ka?b?? [Al-Hulw?n?] said, I said to Aff?n: ?They would say Hish?m heard it [directly] from Muhammad bin Ka?b?. So [Aff?n] said: ?Indeed Hish?m was stricken [with accusations of lying] with regards to this ?ad?th for he would say ?Yahy? narrated to me on authority of Muhammad?, then he claimed afterwards that he heard it from Muhammad [directly]?.?
