Ibn Umar reported that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) made a mention of Ramadan and he with the gesture of his hand said: The month is thus and thus. (He then withdrew his thumb at the third time). He then said: Fast when you see it, and break your fast when you see it, and if the weather is cloudy calculate it (the months of Sha'ban and Shawwal) as thirty days.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَكَرَ رَمَضَانَ، فَضَرَبَ بِيَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ: «الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا، وَهَكَذَا، وَهَكَذَا - ثُمَّ عَقَدَ إِبْهَامَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ - فَصُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ، وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ، فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ ثَلَاثِينَ»

ابواسامہ نے کہا : عبیداللہ نے ہمیں نافع سے حدیث بیان کی ، انھوں نے ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت کی کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے رمضان کا ذکر کیا تو اپنے دونوں ہاتھوں سے سمجھاتے ہوئے فرمایا : " مہینہ اس طرح اور اس طرح اوراس طرح ہوتا ہے ۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے تیسری بار اپنا انگوٹھا بند کرلیا ۔ ( یعنی 29 کی گنتی بتائی ) چاند دیکھ کر روزہ رکھو اور اسے دیکھ کر روزے ختم کرو ، اگر تمھارا مطلع ابر آلود ہوجائے تو اس کے تیس دن پورے کرو ۔ "

This hadith is narrated on the authority of 'Ubaidullah with the same chain of transmitters, and he said: If (the sky) is cloudy for you, then calculate thirty days (for the month of Ramadan).

Ibn'Umar (Allah be pleased with-both of them) reported Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: The month of Ramadan may consist of twenty-nine days. So do not fast till you have sighted it (the new moon) and do not break fast, till you have sighted it (the new moon of Shawwal), and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate.

Abdullah b. 'Umar (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: The month (of Ramadan) may consist of twenty nine days; so when you see the new moon observe fast and when you see (the new moon again at the commencement of the month of Shawwal) then break It, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate it (and complete thirty days).
