Sahih Muslim

Ubaidullah narrated on the authority of the same chain of transmitters that the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) made a mention of Ramadan and said: The month may consist of twenty-nine days, and it may be thus, thus and thus, and (he further) said: Calculate it, but he did not say thirty.
وحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ، وَقَالَ: ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ: «الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ، الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا» وَقَالَ: «فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ» وَلَمْ يَقُلْ «ثَلَاثِينَ»
  یحییٰ بن سعید نے عبیداللہ سے اسی سند کے ساتھ حدیث بیان کی اور کہا : رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے رمضان کا ذکر کرکے فرمایا : " مہینہ انتیس کا ہوتا ہے ، ( اشارے سے کہا : ) مہینہ اس طرح ، اس طرح اوراس طرح ( تین دہائیاں ہوتا ) ہے " اور کہا : " اس کی گنتی پوری کرو ۔ " اور تیس کا لفظ نہیں بولا ۔

Ibn'Umar (Allah be pleased with-both of them) reported Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: The month of Ramadan may consist of twenty-nine days. So do not fast till you have sighted it (the new moon) and do not break fast, till you have sighted it (the new moon of Shawwal), and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate.

'Umar (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: The month (of Ramadan) may consist of twenty nine days; so when you see the new moon observe fast and when you see (the new moon again at the commencement of the month of Shawwal) then break It, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate it (and complete thirty days).
