Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d As-Sa`idi: We were in the company of Allah's Apostle in (the battle of) Al-Khandaq, and he was digging the trench while we were carrying the earth away. He looked at us and said, O Allah! There is no life worth living except the life of the Hereafter, so (please) forgive the Ansar and the Emigrants.
حَدَّثَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمِقْدَامِ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْفُضَيْلُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَازِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيُّ ، كُنَّا مَع رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْخَنْدَقِ وَهُوَ يَحْفِرُ ، وَنَحْنُ نَنْقُلُ التُّرَابَ وَيَمُرُّ بِنَا ، فَقَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ لَا عَيْشَ إِلَّا عَيْشُ الْآخِرَهْ ، فَاغْفِرْ لِلْأَنْصَارِ ، وَالْمُهَاجِرَهْ ، تَابَعَهُ سَهْلُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَهُ .
ہم سے احمد بن مقدام نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے فضیل بن سلیمان نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے ابوحازم نے بیان کیا، ان سے سہل بن سعد ساعدی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہ   ہم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ غزوہ خندق کے موقع پر موجود تھے، نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بھی خندق کھودتے جاتے تھے اور ہم مٹی کو اٹھاتے جاتے اور نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہمارے قریب سے گزرتے ہوئے فرماتے «اللهم لا عيش إلا عيش الآخره،‏‏‏‏ فاغفر للأنصار والمهاجره» ”اے اللہ! زندگی تو بس آخرت ہی کی زندگی ہے، پس تو انصار و مہاجرین کی مغفرت کر۔“ اس روایت کی متابعت سہل بن سعد رضی اللہ عنہ نے بھی نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے کی ہے۔

Narrated Sahl: I heard the Prophet saying, A (small) place equal to an area occupied by a whip in Paradise is better than the (whole) world and whatever is in it; and an undertaking (journey) in the forenoon or in the afternoon for Allah's Cause, is better than the whole world and whatever is in it.

Narrated Mujahid: `Abdullah bin `Umar said, Allah's Apostle took hold of my shoulder and said, 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler. The sub-narrator added: Ibn `Umar used to say, If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death.

Narrated `Abdullah: The Prophet drew a square and then drew a line in the middle of it and let it extend outside the square and then drew several small lines attached to that central line, and said, This is the human being, and this, (the square) in his lease of life, encircles him from all sides (or has encircled him), and this (line), which is outside (the square), is his hope, and these small lines are the calamities and troubles (which may befall him), and if one misses him, an-other will snap (i.e. overtake) him, and if the other misses him, a third will snap (i.e. overtake) him.
