Narrated `Abdullah: The Prophet drew a square and then drew a line in the middle of it and let it extend outside the square and then drew several small lines attached to that central line, and said, This is the human being, and this, (the square) in his lease of life, encircles him from all sides (or has encircled him), and this (line), which is outside (the square), is his hope, and these small lines are the calamities and troubles (which may befall him), and if one misses him, an-other will snap (i.e. overtake) him, and if the other misses him, a third will snap (i.e. overtake) him.

حَدَّثَنَا صَدَقَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ مُنْذِرٍ ، عَنْ رَبِيعِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : خَطَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَطًّا مُرَبَّعًا ، وَخَطَّ خَطًّا فِي الْوَسَطِ خَارِجًا مِنْهُ ، وَخَطَّ خُطَطًا صِغَارًا إِلَى هَذَا الَّذِي فِي الْوَسَطِ مِنْ جَانِبِهِ الَّذِي فِي الْوَسَطِ ، وَقَالَ : هَذَا الْإِنْسَانُ ، وَهَذَا أَجَلُهُ مُحِيطٌ بِهِ ، أَوْ قَدْ أَحَاطَ بِهِ ، وَهَذَا الَّذِي هُوَ خَارِجٌ أَمَلُهُ ، وَهَذِهِ الْخُطَطُ الصِّغَارُ الْأَعْرَاضُ ، فَإِنْ أَخْطَأَهُ هَذَا نَهَشَهُ هَذَا ، وَإِنْ أَخْطَأَهُ هَذَا نَهَشَهُ هَذَا .

ہم سے صدقہ بن فضل نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم کو یحییٰ قطان نے خبر دی، ان سے سفیان ثوری نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ مجھ سے میرے والد نے بیان کیا، ان سے منذر بن یعلیٰ نے، ان سے ربیع بن خثیم نے اور ان سے عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے چوکھٹا خط کھینچا۔ پھر اس کے درمیان ایک خط کھینچا جو چوکھٹے کے درمیان میں تھا۔ اس کے بعد درمیان والے خط کے اس حصے میں جو چوکھٹے کے درمیان میں تھا چھوٹے چھوٹے بہت سے خطوط کھینچے اور پھر فرمایا کہ یہ انسان ہے اور یہ اس کی موت ہے جو اسے گھیرے ہوئے ہے اور یہ جو ( بیچ کا ) خط باہر نکلا ہوا ہے وہ اس کی امید ہے اور چھوٹے چھوٹے خطوط اس کی دنیاوی مشکلات ہیں۔ پس انسان جب ایک ( مشکل ) سے بچ کر نکلتا ہے تو دوسری میں پھنس جاتا ہے اور دوسری سے نکلتا ہے تو تیسری میں پھنس جاتا ہے۔

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet drew a few lines and said, This is (man's) hope, and this is the instant of his death, and while he is in this state (of hope), the nearer line (death) comes to Him.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, Allah will not accept the excuse of any person whose instant of death is delayed till he is sixty years of age.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, The heart of an old man remains young in two respects, i.e., his love for the world (its wealth, amusements and luxuries) and his incessant hope.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Apostle said, The son of Adam (i.e. man) grows old and so also two (desires) grow old with him, i.e., love for wealth and (a wish for) a long life.

Narrated Mahmud bin Ar-Rabi'a: I remember that the Allah's Messenger (saws) took water from a bucket (which was in our home used for getting water out of well) with his mouth (and threw it on my face).

Narrated `Utban bin Malik Al-Ansari: who was one of the men of the tribe of Bani Salim: Allah's Apostle came to me and said, If anybody comes on the Day of Resurrection who has said: La ilaha illal-lah, sincerely, with the intention to win Allah's Pleasure, Allah will make the Hell-Fire forbidden for him.
