Narrated Jabir: A boy was born for a man among us, and the man named him Al-Qasim. We said to him, We will not call you Abu-l-Qasim, nor will we respect you for that. The Prophet was informed about that, and he said, Name your son `Abdur-Rahman.

حَدَّثَنَا صَدَقَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلَامٌ ، فَسَمَّاهُ الْقَاسِمَ ، فَقُلْنَا : لَا نَكْنِيكَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ وَلَا كَرَامَةَ ، فَأَخْبَرَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : سَمِّ ابْنَكَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ .

ہم سے صدقہ بن فضل نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم کو سفیان بن عیینہ نے خبر دی، ان سے ابن المنکدر نے بیان کیا اور ان سے جابر رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ ہم میں سے ایک صاحب کے یہاں بچہ پیدا ہوا تو انہوں نے اس کا نام قاسم رکھا۔ ہم نے ان سے کہا کہ ہم تم کو ابوالقاسم کہہ کر نہیں پکاریں گے ( کیونکہ ابوالقاسم نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی کنیت تھی ) اور نہ ہم تمہاری عزت کے لیے ایسا کریں گے۔ ان صاحب نے اس کی خبر نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو دی، تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ اپنے بیٹے کا نام عبدالرحمٰن رکھ لے۔

Narrated Jabi: A man among us begot a boy whom he named Al-Qasim. The people said, We will not call him (i.e., the father) by that Kuniya (Abu-l-Qasim) till we ask the Prophet about it. The Prophet said. Name yourselves by my name, but do not call (yourselves) by my Kuniya.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Abu-l-Qasim (The Prophet) said, Name yourselves by my name, but do not call yourselves by my Kuniya.

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: A man among us begot a boy whom he named Al-Qasim. The people said (to him), We will not call you Abul-l-Qasim, nor will we please you by calling you so. The man came to the Prophet and mentioned that to him. The Prophet said to him, Name your son `Abdur-Rahman.

Narrated Al-Musaiyab: That his father (Hazn bin Wahb) went to the Prophet and the Prophet asked (him), What is your name? He replied, My name is Hazn. The Prophet said, You are Sahl. Hazn said, I will not change the name with which my father has named me. Ibn Al-Musaiyab added: We have had roughness (in character) ever since. Narrated Al-Musaiyab: on the authority of his father similarly as above (i.e., 209).

Narrated Sahl: When Al-Mundhir bin Abu Usaid was born, he was brought to the Prophet who placed him on his thigh. While Abu Usaid was sitting there, the Prophet was busy with something in his hands so Abu Usaid told someone to take his son from the thigh of the Prophet . When the Prophet finished his job (with which he was busy), he said, Where is the boy? Abu Usaid replied, We have sent him home. The Prophet said, What is his name? Abu Usaid said, (His name is) so-and-so. The Prophet said, No, his name is Al-Mundhir. So he called him Al-Mundhir from that day.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Zainab's original name was Barrah, but it was said' By that she is giving herself the prestige of piety. So the Prophet changed her name to Zainab.
