Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Allah's Apostle came to Medina and the people used to pay in advance the price of fruits to be delivered within one or two years. (The sub-narrator is in doubt whether it was one to two years or two to three years.) The Prophet said, Whoever pays money in advance for dates (to be delivered later) should pay it for known specified weight and measure (of the dates).
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ زُرَارَةَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمِنْهَالِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍرَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَالنَّاسُ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي الثَّمَرِ الْعَامَ وَالْعَامَيْنِ ، أَوْ قَالَ : عَامَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً ، شَكَّ إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، فَقَالَ : مَنْ سَلَّفَ فِي تَمْرٍ ، فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ .
ہم سے عمرو بن زرارہ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم کو اسماعیل بن علیہ نے خبر دی، انہیں ابن ابی نجیح نے خبر دی، انہیں عبداللہ بن کثیر نے، انہیں ابومنہال نے اور ان سے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا کہ   جب نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم مدینہ تشریف لائے تو ( مدینہ کے ) لوگ پھلوں میں ایک سال یا دو سال کے لیے بیع سلم کرتے تھے۔ یا انہوں نے یہ کہا کہ دو سال اور تین سال ( کے لیے کرتے تھے ) شک اسماعیل کو ہوا تھا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ جو شخص بھی کھجور میں بیع سلم کرے، اسے مقررہ پیمانے یا مقررہ وزن کے ساتھ کرنی چاہئیے۔

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet came to Medina and the people used to pay in advance the price of dates to be delivered within two or three years. Narrated Shu`ba: Muhammad or `Abdullah bin Abu Al-Mujalid said, Abdullah bin Shaddad and Abu Burda differed regarding As-Salam, so they sent me to Ibn Abi `Aufa and I asked him about it. He replied, 'In the lifetime of Allah's Apostle, Abu Bakr and `Umar, we used to pay in advance the prices of wheat, barley, dried grapes and dates to be delivered later. I also asked Ibn Abza and he, too, replied as above.'

I asked (him), Was the price paid (in advance) to those who had the things to be delivered later? `Abdullah bin `Aufa replied, We did not use to ask them about that. Then they sent me to `Abdur Rahman bin Abza and I asked him. He replied, The companions of the Prophet used to practice Salam in the lifetime of the Prophet; and we did not use to ask them whether they had standing crops or not.
