Narrated Anas bin Malik: I took `Abdullah bin Abu Talha to Allah's Apostle to perform Tahnik for him. (Tahnik was a custom among the Muslims that whenever a child was born they used to take it to the Prophet who would chew a piece of date and put a part of its juice in the child's mouth). I saw the Prophet and he had an instrument for branding in his hands and was branding the camels of Zakat.

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍرَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ , قَالَ : غَدَوْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ لِيُحَنِّكَهُ ، فَوَافَيْتُهُ فِي يَدِهِ الْمِيسَمُ يَسِمُ إِبِلَ الصَّدَقَةِ .

ہم سے ابراہیم بن المنذر نے بیان کیا ‘ کہا کہ ہم سے ولید نے بیان کیا ‘ کہا کہ ہم سے ابوعمرو اوزاعی نے بیان کیا ‘ کہا کہ مجھ سے اسحاق بن عبداللہ بن ابی طلحہ نے بیان کیا ‘ کہا کہ مجھ سے انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ میں عبداللہ بن ابی طلحہ کو لے کر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ان کی تحنیک کر دیں۔ ( یعنی اپنے منہ سے کوئی چیز چبا کر ان کے منہ میں ڈال دیں ) میں نے اس وقت دیکھا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ہاتھ میں داغ لگانے کا آلہ تھا اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم زکوٰۃ کے اونٹوں پر داغ لگا رہے تھے۔

Narrated Ibn `Umar: Allah's Apostle enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the `Id prayer. (One Sa' = 3 Kilograms approx.)

Narrated Ibn `Umar: Allah's Apostle made it incumbent on all the slave or free Muslims, male or female, to pay one Sa' of dates or barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr.

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: We used to give one Sa' of meal or one Sa' of barley or one Sa' of dates, or one Sa' of cottage cheese or one Sa' of Raisins (dried grapes) as Zakat-ul-Fitr.

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: The Prophet ordered (Muslims) to give one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr. The people rewarded two Mudds of wheat as equal to that.

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: In the lifetime of the Prophet we used to give one Sa' of food or one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley or one Sa' of Raisins (dried grapes) as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr. And when Muawiya became the Caliph and the wheat was (available in abundance) he said, I think (observe) that one Mudd (of wheat) equals two Mudds (of any of the above mentioned things).
