Abdullah narrated: The Messenger of Allah would fasting during the beginning of every month for three days, and Friday was the least of the days that he did not fast.
حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى، وَطَلْقُ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ، عَنْ شَيْبَانَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ زِرٍّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُ مِنْ غُرَّةِ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَلَّمَا كَانَ يُفْطِرُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ . قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدِ اسْتَحَبَّ قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ صِيَامَ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنَّمَا يُكْرَهُ أَنْ يَصُومَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ لَا يَصُومُ قَبْلَهُ وَلَا بَعْدَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَرَوَى شُعْبَةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَاصِمٍ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ وَلَمْ يَرْفَعْهُ.
عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہر ماہ کے شروع کے تین دن روزے رکھتے۔ اور ایسا کم ہوتا تھا کہ جمعہ کے دن آپ روزے سے نہ ہوں۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی الله عنہ کی حدیث حسن غریب ہے، ۲- شعبہ نے یہ حدیث عاصم سے روایت کی ہے اور اسے مرفوع نہیں کیا، ۳- اس باب میں ابن عمر اور ابوہریرہ رضی الله عنہم سے بھی احادیث آئی ہیں، ۴- اہل علم کی ایک جماعت نے جمعہ کے دن روزہ رکھنے کو مستحب قرار دیا ہے۔ مکروہ یہ ہے کہ آدمی صرف جمعہ کو روزہ رکھے نہ اس سے پہلے رکھے اور نہ اس کے بعد۔

Ubaidullah (bin Muslim) Al-Qurashi narrated from his father who said: I asked - or; the Prophet was asked - about fasting daily. So he said: 'Your family has a right over you.' Then he said: 'Fast Ramadan and that which is after it, and every Wednesday and Thursday. If you do that, then you will have fasted daily, as well as broken (the fast).'
