Narrated 'Abdullah bin Rafi': I said to Abu Hurairah: 'Why were you given the Kunyah Abu Hurairah?' He said: 'Do you not fear me?' He said: Indeed, I am in awe of you.' He said: 'I used to tend the sheep of my people, and I had a small kitten; so I used to place it in a tree at night, and during the day I would take it and play with it. So they named me Abu Hurairah.'

حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْمُرَابِطِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ:‏‏‏‏ لِمَ كُنِّيتَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَمَا تَفْرَقُ مِنِّي ؟ قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ بَلَى وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَهَابُكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كُنْتُ أَرْعَى غَنَمَ أَهْلِي وَكَانَتْ لِي هُرَيْرَةٌ صَغِيرَةٌ،‏‏‏‏ فَكُنْتُ أَضَعُهَا بِاللَّيْلِ فِي شَجَرَةٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِذَا كَانَ النَّهَارُ ذَهَبْتُ بِهَا مَعِي،‏‏‏‏ فَلَعِبْتُ بِهَا،‏‏‏‏ فَكَنَّوْنِي أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ.

عبداللہ بن رافع کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے ابوہریرہ رضی الله عنہ سے پوچھا: آپ کی کنیت ابوہریرہ کیوں پڑی؟ تو انہوں نے کہا: کیا تم مجھ سے ڈرتے نہیں ہو؟ میں نے کہا: کیوں نہیں؟ قسم اللہ کی! میں آپ سے ڈرتا ہوں، پھر انہوں نے کہا: میں اپنے گھر والوں کی بکریاں چراتا تھا، میری ایک چھوٹی سی بلی تھی میں اس کو رات میں ایک درخت پر بٹھا دیتا اور دن میں اسے اپنے ساتھ لے جاتا، اور اس سے کھیلتا، تو لوگوں نے میری کنیت ابوہریرہ رکھ دی۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: یہ حدیث حسن غریب ہے۔

Narrated Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] : There is none with more Ahadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) than I, except for 'Abdullah bin 'Amr, for he used to write, (the Ahadith) and I did not used to write.

Narrated Abu Idris Al-Khawlani: When 'Umar bin Al-Khattab removed 'Umair bin Sa'd as governor of Hims, he appointed Mu'awiyah. The people said: 'He has removed 'Umair and appointed Mu'awiyah.' So 'Umair said: 'Do not mentioned Mu'awiyah except with good, for indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: O Allah guide (others) by him.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: We camped with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) at a place, and the people began passing by. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say: 'Who is this, O Abu Hurairah?' So I would say: 'So-and-so.' So he would say: 'What an excellent slave of Allah this is.' And he would say: 'Who is this?' So I would say: 'So-and-so.' So he would say: 'What a bad slave of Allah this is.' Until Khalid bin Al-Walid passed, so he said: 'Who is this?' So I said: 'This is Khalid bin Al-Walid.' He said: 'What an excellent slave of Allah is Khalid bin Al-Walid, a sword from among the swords of Allah.'
