Ibn Mas'ud said: I asked the Messenger of Allah: 'O Messenger of Allah! Which is the most virtuous of deeds?' He said: 'Salat during its appropriate time.' I said: 'Then what, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Being dutiful to one's parents.' I said: 'Then what, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Jihad in the cause of Allah.' Then the messenger of Allah was silent, and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more.'
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنِ الْمَسْعُودِيِّ، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ الْعَيْزَارِ، عَنِ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ الصَّلَاةُ لِمِيقَاتِهَا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ سَكَتَ عَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏رَوَاهُ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَشُعْبَةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ الْعَيْزَارِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ رُوِيَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وأَبُو عَمْروٍ الشَّيْبَانِيَّ اسْمُهُ سَعْدُ.
عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے پوچھا: اللہ کے رسول! کون سا عمل سب سے افضل ہے؟ آپ نے فرمایا: ”وقت پر نماز ادا کرنا“، میں نے پوچھا: اللہ کے رسول! پھر کون سا عمل زیادہ بہتر ہے؟ آپ نے فرمایا: ”ماں باپ کے ساتھ حسن سلوک کرنا“، میں نے پوچھا: اللہ کے رسول! پھر کون سا عمل؟ آپ نے فرمایا: ”اللہ کی راہ میں جہاد کرنا“، پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم خاموش ہو گئے، حالانکہ اگر میں زیادہ پوچھتا تو آپ زیادہ بتاتے ۱؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- یہ حدیث حسن صحیح ہے، ۲- اسے ابوعمرو شیبانی، شعبہ اور کئی لوگوں نے ولید بن عیزار سے روایت کی ہے، ۳- یہ حدیث ابوعمرو شیبانی کے واسطہ سے ابن مسعود سے دوسری سندوں سے بھی آئی ہے۔

Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah narrated from his father who said: The messenger of Allah said: 'Shall I not tell you of the biggest of the major sins?' they said : 'Of course! O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'To join partners with Allah, and disobeying one's parents.' He said : He sat up, and he had been reclining. He said: 'And false testimony, or false speech.' And the Messenger of Allah would not stop saying it until we said (to ourselves): 'I wish that he would stop.'

He said: Yes. He verbally abuses the father of a man, who in turn, verbally abuses his father, and he (retaliates and) curses his mother , so he curses his mother.
