It was narrated that Abu Jabirah bin Dahhak said: (Allah's saying) Nor insult one another by nicknames(Surah Al Hujarat 49:11) was revealed concerning us, the Ansar. When the Prophet(ﷺ) came to us, a man among us would have two or three names, and the Prophet(ﷺ) might call him by one of those names, only to be told: O Messenger of Allah(ﷺ), he does not like that name. Then: Nor insult one another by nicknames. was revealed.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ،‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ دَاوُدَ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ أَبِي جَبِيرَةَ بْنِ الضَّحَّاكِ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فِينَا نَزَلَتْ مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَلا تَنَابَزُوا بِالأَلْقَابِ سورة الحجرات آية 11، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ،‏‏‏‏ وَالرَّجُلُ مِنَّا لَهُ الِاسْمَانِ وَالثَّلَاثَةُ،‏‏‏‏ فَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رُبَّمَا دَعَاهُمْ بِبَعْضِ تِلْكَ الْأَسْمَاءِ ،‏‏‏‏ فَيُقَالُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏ إِنَّهُ يَغْضَبُ مِنْ هَذَا،‏‏‏‏ فَنَزَلَتْ وَلا تَنَابَزُوا بِالأَلْقَابِ سورة الحجرات آية 11.

ابوجبیرہ بن ضحاک رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ «ولا تنابزوا بالألقاب» ہم انصار کے بارے میں نازل ہوئی ہے، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم جب ہمارے پاس ( مدینہ ) تشریف لائے تو ہم میں سے ہر ایک کے دو دو، تین تین نام تھے، بسا اوقات نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم انہیں ان کا کوئی ایک نام لے کر پکارتے، تو آپ سے عرض کیا جاتا: اللہ کے رسول! فلاں شخص فلاں نام سے غصہ ہوتا ہے، تو اس وقت یہ آیت کریمہ نازل ہوئی: «ولا تنابزوا بالألقاب» کسی کو برے القاب سے نہ پکارو ۱؎۔

It was narrated that Miqdad bin 'Amr said: The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) commanded us to throw dust in the faces of those who praise others.

It was narrated from Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakrah that his father said: A man praised another man in the presence of Messenger of Allah(ﷺ). The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said: 'Woe to you,you have cut the neck of your companion,'several times. Then he said: 'If anyone of you praises his brother, let him say: I think he is lie this, but I do not sanctify anyone before Allah.
