It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: I heard Abu Saeed Al-Khudri say: 'A Dirham for a Dirham and a Dinar for a Dinar.' So I said: 'I heard Ibn 'Abbas say something other than that.' He said: 'But I met Ibn 'Abbas and said: Tell me about what you say concerning exchange is it something that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) or something that You found in the Book of Allah? He said: I did not find it in the Book of Allah, and I did not hear it from the Messenger of Allah; rather Usamah bin Zaid told me that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Usury is only in credit. [1]

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ الدِّرْهَمُ بِالدِّرْهَمِ وَالدِّينَارُ بِالدِّينَارِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ. (حديث موقوف) (حديث مرفوع) قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَمَا إِنِّي لَقِيتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ هَذَا الَّذِي تَقُولُ فِي الصَّرْفِ أَشَيْءٌ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمْ شَيْءٌ وَجَدْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا وَجَدْتُهُ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَلَا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَكِنْ أَخْبَرَنِي أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّمَا الرِّبَا فِي النَّسِيئَةِ .

ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ کو کہتے سنا کہ درہم کو درہم سے، اور دینار کو دینار سے برابر برابر بیچنا چاہیئے، تو میں نے ان سے کہا کہ میں نے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کو کچھ اور کہتے سنا ہے، ابوسعید رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: تو میں ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے جا کر ملا، اور میں نے ان سے کہا: آپ بیع صرف کے متعلق جو کہتے ہیں مجھے بتائیے، کیا آپ نے کچھ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سنا ہے؟ کتاب اللہ ( قرآن ) میں اس سلسلہ میں آپ کو کوئی چیز ملی ہے؟ اس پر وہ بولے: نہ تو میں نے اس کو کتاب اللہ ( قرآن ) میں پایا ہے، اور نہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہی سے سنا ہے، البتہ مجھے اسامہ بن زید رضی اللہ عنہما نے بتایا ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ہے: سود صرف ادھار میں ہے ۱؎۔

That was just my own opinion, but Abu Sa'eed narrated from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he forbade exchange (of like items if extra is given). '

Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah, who was with 'Umar bin Khattab, said: 'Show us your gold, then come to us; when our treasure comes, we will give you your silver.' 'Umar said: 'No, by Allah, you will give him silver (now), or give him back his gold, for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Silver for gold is usury, unless it is exchanged on the spot. '

It was narrated from Umar bin Muhammad bin 'Ali bin abi Talib, from his father, that his grandfather said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Dinar for Dinar, Dirham for Dirham, with no increase between them. Whoever has need of silver, let him trade gold for it, and whoever has need of gold, let him trade silver for it, and let the transaction be done on the spot. '
