It was narrated that An-Nu'man bin Bashir said: I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say: 'That which is lawful is clear and that which is unlawful is clear, but between them there are matters which are doubtful.' And sometimes he said: But between them are matters that are not as clear. I will describe the likeness of that for you. Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has a sanctuary and the sanctuary of Allah is that which He has forbidden. Whoever grazes around the sanctuary will soon transgress into the sanctuary. And whoever approaches a matter that is unclear, he will soon wind up in the sanctuary. And sometimes he said: He will soon transgress, and indeed whoever mixes in doubt, he will soon cross into it.

أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ يَزِيدَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ زُرَيْعٍ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ الْحَلَالَ بَيِّنٌ وَإِنَّ الْحَرَامَ بَيِّنٌ،‏‏‏‏ وَإِنَّ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ أُمُورًا مُشْتَبِهَاتٍ ،‏‏‏‏ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَإِنَّ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ أُمُورًا مُشْتَبِهَةً،‏‏‏‏ وَسَأَضْرِبُ فِي ذَلِكَ مَثَلًا إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ حَمَى حِمًى،‏‏‏‏ وَإِنَّ حِمَى اللَّهِ مَا حَرَّمَ،‏‏‏‏ وَإِنَّهُ مَنْ يَرْعَ حَوْلَ الْحِمَى يُوشِكُ أَنْ يُخَالِطَ الْحِمَى ،‏‏‏‏ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَرْتَعَ وَإِنَّ مَنْ خَالَطَ الرِّيبَةَ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَجْسُرَ .

نعمان بن بشیر رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا: ”حلال واضح ہے، اور حرام ( بھی ) واضح ہے، ان کے درمیان شبہ والی کچھ چیزیں ہیں ۱؎، میں تم سے ایک مثال بیان کرتا ہوں: اللہ تعالیٰ نے ایک چراگاہ کی باڑھ لگائی ہے ( اور اللہ کی چراگاہ محرمات ہیں ) جو بھی اس باڑھ کے اردگرد چرائے گا، عین ممکن ہے کہ وہ چراگاہ میں بھی چرا ڈالے۔ ( کبھی «يوشك أن يخالط الحمى» کے بجائے «يوشك أن يرتع» کہا ) ( معنی ایک ہے الفاظ کا فرق ہے ) ، اسی طرح جو شبہ کا کام کرے گا ممکن ہے وہ آگے ( حرام کام کرنے کی ) جرات کر بیٹھے۔ ۱؎: کبھی «إن بين ذلك أمور مشتبهات» کے بجائے یوں کہا: «إن بين ذلك أمورا مشتبهة» مفہوم ایک ہی ہے بس لفظ کے واحد و جمع ہونے کا فرق ہے، گویا دنیاوی چیزیں تین طرح کی ہیں: حلال، حرام اور مشتبہ، پس حلال چیزیں وہ ہیں جو کتاب و سنت میں بالکل واضح ہیں جیسے دودھ، شہد، میوہ، گائے اور بکری وغیرہ، اسی طرح حرام چیزیں بھی کتاب و سنت میں واضح ہیں، جیسے شراب، زنا، قتل اور جھوٹ وغیرہ، اور مشتبہ وہ ہے جو کسی حد تک حلال سے اور کسی حد تک حرام سے یعنی دونوں سے مشابہت رکھتی ہو، جیسے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے راستہ میں ایک کھجور پڑا ہوا دیکھا تو فرمایا کہ اگر اس بات کا خوف نہ ہوتا کہ یہ صدقہ کا ہو سکتا ہے تو میں اسے کھا لیتا۔ اس لیے مشتبہ امر سے اپنے آپ کو بچا لینا ضروری ہے۔ کیونکہ اسے اپنانے کی صورت میں حرام میں پڑنے کا خطرہ ہے، نیز شبہ والی چیز میں پڑتے پڑتے حرام میں پڑنے اور اسے اپنانے کی جسارت کر سکتا ہے۔

It was narrated that Abu Al-Hawra' As-Sa'di said: I said to Al-Hasan bin 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: 'What did you memorize from the Messenger of Allah [SAW]?' He said: I memorized from him: 'Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.'

It was narrated that Mus'ab bin Sa'd said: Sa'd had many grapevines and he had someone looking after them for him. (The vines) bore many grapes, and that man wrote to him (saying): 'I am afraid that the grapes will be wasted; what do you think if I squeeze them to make juice? Sa'd wrote to him (saying): 'When this letter of mine reaches you, leave my land, for by Allah I cannot trust you with anything ever agin.' So he made him leave his land.

It was narrated that 'Amir bin 'Abdullah said: I saw the letter of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab to Abu Musa (in which he said): 'A caravan came to me from Ash-Sham carrying a thick black paint like the pitch that is daubed on camels. I asked them how long they cooked it, and they told me that they cooked it until it was reduced by two-third. So the bad two-third had gone, one-third to take away evil and one-third to take away the bad smell. So let those who are with you drink it.
