Translation

It was narrated from Abu Burdah that Abu Musa said: I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) when he was using the Siwak and with me were two men of the Ash'aris - one on my right and the other on my left - who were seeking to be appointed as officials. I said: 'By the One Who sent you as a Prophet with the truth, they did not tell me why they wanted to come with me and I did not realize that they were seeking to be appointed as officials.' And I could see his Siwak beneath his lip, then it slipped and he said: 'We do not' - or; 'We will never appoint as an official anyone who seeks that. Rather you should go.' So he sent his (Abu Musa) to Yemen, then he sent Mu'adh bin Jabal to go after him - may Allah be pleased with them.

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى وَهُوَ ابْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا قُرَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بُرْدَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَقْبَلْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعِي رَجُلَانِ مِنَ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَحَدُهُمَا عَنْ يَمِينِي وَالْآخَرُ عَنْ يَسَارِي وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتَاكُ فَكِلَاهُمَا سَأَلَ الْعَمَلَ قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ نَبِيًّا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏مَا أَطْلَعَانِي عَلَى مَا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمَا وَمَا شَعَرْتُ أَنَّهُمَا يَطْلُبَانِ الْعَمَلَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى سِوَاكِهِ تَحْتَ شَفَتِهِ قَلَصَتْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّا لَا أَوْ لَنْ نَسْتَعِينَ عَلَى الْعَمَلِ مَنْ أَرَادَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَكِنْ اذْهَبْ أَنْتَ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَبَعَثَهُ عَلَى الْيَمَنِ ثُمَّ أَرْدَفَهُ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا.

ابوموسیٰ اشعری رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آیا، میرے ساتھ قبیلہ اشعر کے دو آدمی تھے، ان میں سے ایک میرے دائیں اور دوسرا میرے بائیں تھا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم مسواک کر رہے تھے، تو ان دونوں نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے کام ( نوکری ) کی درخواست کی ۲؎، میں نے عرض کیا: اس ذات کی قسم جس نے آپ کو نبی برحق بنا کر بھیجا ہے، ان دونوں نے اپنے ارادے سے مجھے آگاہ نہیں کیا تھا، اور نہ ہی مجھے اس کا احساس تھا کہ وہ کام ( نوکری ) کے طلب گار ہیں، گویا میں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی مسواک کو ( جو اس وقت آپ کر رہے تھے ) آپ کے ہونٹ کے نیچے دیکھ رہا ہوں اور ہونٹ اوپر اٹھا ہوا ہے، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ہم کام پر اس شخص سے مدد نہیں لیتے جو اس کا طلب گار ہو ۳؎، لیکن ( اے ابوموسیٰ! ) تم جاؤ ( یعنی ان دونوں کے بجائے میں تمہیں کام دیتا ہوں ) ، چنانچہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ان کو یمن کا ذمہ دار بنا کر بھیجا، پھر معاذ بن جبل رضی اللہ عنہم کو ان کے پیچھے بھیجا۔

Abdur-Rahman bin Abu 'Atiq said: My father told me: 'I heard 'Aishah say, (narrating) from the Prophet (ﷺ): Siwak is a means of purification for the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'I have indeed urged you with regard to the Siwak.'

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Were it not that it would be too difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the Siwak at (the time of) every Salah.

It was narrated from Al-Miqdam - Abu Shuraih - that his father said: I said to 'Aishah: 'What did the Prophet (ﷺ) start with when he entered his house?' She said: 'The Siwak.'
