It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: When these Verses were revealed - 'And come not near to the orphan's property, except to improve it,' and 'Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans' - the people avoided the property and food of the orphans. That caused hardship to the Muslims and they complained about that to the Prophet. Then Allah revealed: 'And they ask you concerning orphans. Say: The best thing is to work honestly in their property, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allah knows him who means mischief (e.g. to swallow their property) from him who means good (e.g. to save their property). And if Allah had wished, He could have put you into difficulties.'

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّلْتِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُدَيْنَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَطَاءٍ وَهُوَ ابْنُ السَّائِبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ وَلا تَقْرَبُوا مَالَ الْيَتِيمِ إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ سورة الأنعام آية 152، وَ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَالَ الْيَتَامَى ظُلْمًا سورة النساء آية 10، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ اجْتَنَبَ النَّاسُ مَالَ الْيَتِيمِ وَطَعَامَهُ فَشَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَشَكَوْا ذَلِكَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ:‏‏‏‏ وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْيَتَامَى قُلْ إِصْلاحٌ لَهُمْ خَيْرٌ سورة البقرة آية 220،‏‏‏‏ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ:‏‏‏‏ لأَعْنَتَكُمْ سورة البقرة آية 220.

عبداللہ بن عباس رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ جب آیت کریمہ: «‏ولا تقربوا مال اليتيم إلا بالتي هي أحسن» ”یتیم کے مال کے قریب نہ جاؤ مگر اس طریقے سے جو کہ مستحسن ہو ( یہاں تک کہ وہ اپنے سن رشد کو پہنچ جائے ) “ ( الأنعام: ۱۵۲ ) اور «إن الذين يأكلون أموال اليتامى ظلما» ”اور جو لوگ یتیموں کا مال ظلم و زیادتی کر کے کھاتے ہیں ( وہ دراصل مال نہیں کھاتے وہ اپنے پیٹوں میں انگارے بھر رہے ہیں“ ( النساء: ۱۰ ) نازل ہوئی تو لوگ یتیموں کے مال کے قریب جانے ( اور ان کی حفاظت کی ذمہ داریاں سنبھالنے ) اور ان کا مال کھانے سے بچنے لگے۔ تو یہ چیز مسلمانوں پر شاق ( دشوار ) ہو گئی، چنانچہ لوگوں نے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے اس کی شکایت کی جس پر اللہ تعالیٰ نے آیت کریمہ: «ويسألونك عن اليتامى قل إصلاح لهم خير‏» سے «‏لأعنتكم» ”اور تم سے یتیموں کے بارے میں بھی سوال کرتے ہیں۔ آپ کہہ دیجئیے کہ ان کی خیر خواہی بہتر ہے اگر تم ان کا مال اپنے مال میں ملا بھی لو تو وہ تمہارے بھائی ہیں۔ بدنیت اور نیک نیت ہر ایک کو اللہ خوب جانتا ہے۔ اور اگر اللہ چاہتا تو تمہیں مشقت میں ڈال دیتا، یقیناً اللہ تعالیٰ غلبہ اور حکمت والا ہے“ ( البقرہ: ۲۲۰ ) تک نازل فرمائی ۳؎۔

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said -concerning the Verse: Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans -A man would have an orphan in his care, and he would keep his food, drink and vessels separate. This caused hardship to the Muslims, so Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: And they ask you concerning orphans. Say: The best thing is to work honestly in their property, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers (in religion), so it is permissible for you to mix with them.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: Avoid the seven sins that doom one to Hell. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what are they? He said: Associating others with Allah (Shirk), magic, killing a soul whom Allah has forbidden killing, except in cases dictated by Islamic law, consuming Riba, consuming the property of orphans, fleeing on the day of the march (to battlefield), and slandering chaste women who never even think of anything touching their chastity and are good believers.

It was narrated from An-Nu'man bin Bashir that his father gave him a slave as a present, then he came to the Prophet to ask him to bear witness (to that). He said: Have you given a present to all of your children? He said: No. He said: Then take it back. This wording is that of (one of the narrators) Muhammad.

It was narrated from An-Nu'man bin Bashir that his father brought him to the Messenger of Allah and said: I have given my son a slave of mine as a present. The Messenger of Allah said: Have you given a present to all of your children? He said: No. The Messenger of Allah said: Then take (your present) back.

It was narrated from An-Nu'man bin Bashir that his father Bashir bin Sa'd brought An-Nu'man with him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have given this son of mine a slave who belonged to me as a present. The Messenger of Allah said: Have you given a present to all your children? He said: No. He said: Then take (your present) back.

It was narrated from Bashir bin Sa'd that he brought An-Nu'man to the Prophet and said: I want to give this son of mine a slave as a present, and if you think that I should go ahead with it, I will go ahead.
