It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that he presented himself to the Messenger of Allah on the Day of Uhud when he was fourteen years old, but he did not permit him (to join the army). He presented himself on the Day of Al-Khandaq when he was fifteen years old, and he permitted him (to join the army).
أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ،‏‏‏‏ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَرَضَهُ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمْ يُجِزْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَرَضَهُ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ وَهُوَ ابْنُ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَجَازَهُ .
عبداللہ بن عمر رضی الله عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ   انہوں نے اپنے آپ کو جنگ احد کے موقع پر ( جنگ میں شریک ہونے کے لیے ) ۱۴ سال کی عمر میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے سامنے پیش کیا تو آپ نے انہیں ( جنگ میں شرکت کی ) اجازت نہ دی۔ اور غزوہ خندق کے موقع پر جب کہ وہ پندرہ سال کے ہو چکے تھے اپنے آپ کو پیش کیا تو آپ نے اجازت دے دی ( اور مجاہدین میں شامل کر لیا ) ۔

It was narrated that 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Messenger of Allah said: Actions are but by intentions, and each man will have but that which he intended. Whoever emigrated for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, his emigration was for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and whoever emigrated for the sake of some worldly gain or to marry some woman, his emigration was for that for which he emigrated.
