It was narrated from Sahl bin Sa'd that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have come to offer myself to you (in marriage). The Messenger of Allah looked her up and down then lowered his head. When the woman saw that he was not saying anything about her, she sat down. A man among his Companions stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, if you do not want to marry her, then marry me to her. He said: Do you have anything? He said: No, by Allah, I do not have anything. He said: Look, even if it is only an iron ring. He went, then he came back and said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, not even an iron ring, but this is my Izar (lower garment) - Sahl said: He did not have a Rida' (upper garment) - she can have half of it. The Messenger of Allah said: What could she do with your Izar? If you wear it, she will not have any of it, and if she wears it, you will not have any of it. The man sat down for a long time, then he got up, and the Messenger of Allah saw him leaving, so he ordered that he be called back. When he came, he said: What do you know of the Qur'an? He said: I know Surah such-and-such, and Surah such-and-such, and listed them. He said: Can you recite them by heart? He said: Yes. He said: Then I marry you to her on the basis of what you know of the Qur'an.

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ،‏‏‏‏ أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ جِئْتُ لِأَهَبَ نَفْسِي لَكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَصَعَّدَ النَّظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَصَوَّبَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْضِ فِيهَا شَيْئًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏جَلَسَتْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ؟ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَاللَّهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ انْظُرْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ رَجَعَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ سَهْلٌ:‏‏‏‏ مَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ فَلَهَا نِصْفُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ ؟ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَامَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏مُوَلِّيًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَمَرَ بِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَدُعِيَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا عَدَّدَهَا فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ تَقْرَؤُهُنَّ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبٍ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ .

سہل بن سعد رضی الله عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ ایک عورت رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آئی اور عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! میں آئی ہوں کہ اپنے آپ کو آپ کے حوالے کر دوں، ( یہ سن کر ) رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اسے دیکھا اور نیچے سے اوپر تک دھیان سے دیکھا۔ پھر آپ نے اپنا سر جھکا لیا ( غور فرمانے لگے کہ کیا کریں ) ، عورت نے جب دیکھا کہ آپ نے اس کے متعلق ( بروقت ) کچھ نہیں فیصلہ فرمایا تو وہ ( انتظار میں ) بیٹھ گئی، اتنے میں آپ کے ایک صحابی کھڑے ہوئے اور عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! اگر آپ اپنے لیے اس عورت کی ضرورت نہیں پاتے تو آپ اس عورت سے میری شادی کر دیجئیے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: ”کیا تمہارے پاس ( بطور مہر دینے کے لیے ) کوئی چیز ہے؟“ اس نے کہا نہیں، قسم اللہ کی! میرے پاس کوئی چیز نہیں ہے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: ”دیکھو ( تلاش کرو ) لوہے کی انگوٹھی ۱؎ ہی مل جائے تو لے کر آؤ“، تو وہ آدمی ( تلاش میں ) نکلا، پھر لوٹ کر آیا اور کہا: اللہ کے رسول! قسم اللہ کی! کوئی چیز نہیں ملی حتیٰ کہ لوہے کہ انگوٹھی بھی نہیں ملی، میرے پاس بس میرا یہی تہبند ہے، میں آدھی تہبند اس کو دے سکتا ہوں، سہل ( جو اس حدیث کے راوی ہیں ) کہتے ہیں: اس کے پاس چادر نہیں تھی ) ، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”تم اپنے تہبند سے کیا کر سکتے ہو؟ تم پہنو گے تو وہ نہیں پہن سکتی اور وہ پہنے گی تو تم نہیں پہن سکتے“، وہ آدمی بیٹھ گیا اور دیر تک بیٹھا رہا، پھر ( مایوس ہو کر ) اٹھ کر چلا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اسے پیٹھ پھیر کر جاتے ہوئے دیکھا تو اسے حکم دے کر بلا لیا، جب وہ آیا تو آپ نے اس سے پوچھا: ”تمہیں قرآن کتنا یاد ہے؟“ انہوں نے کہا: فلاں فلاں سورت، اس نے گن کر بتایا۔ آپ نے کہا: ”کیا تم اسے زبانی ( روانی سے ) پڑھ سکتے ہو“، اس نے کہا: جی ہاں، آپ نے فرمایا: ” ( جاؤ ) جو تمہیں قرآن یاد ہے اسے یاد کرا دو اس کے عوض میں نے تمہیں اس کا مالک بنا دیا“ ( یعنی میں نے اس سے تمہاری شادی کر دی ) ۔

It was narrated that Anas said: Abu Talhah married Umm Sulaim and the dowry between them was Islam. Umm Sulaim became Muslim before Abu Talhah, and he proposed to her but she said: 'I have become Muslim; if you become Muslim I will marry you.' So he became Muslim, and that was the dowry between them.

It was narrated that Anas said: Abu Talhah proposed marriage to Umm Sulaim and she said: 'By Allah, a man like you is not to be rejected, O Abu Talhah, but you are a disbeliever and I am a Muslim, and it is not permissible for me to marry you. If you become Muslim, that will be my dowry, and I will not ask you for anything else.' So he became Muslim and that was her dowry. (one of the narrators) Thabit said: I have never heard of a woman whose dowry was more precious than Umm Sulaim (whose dowry was) Islam. And he consummated the marriage with her, and she bore him a child.

It was narrated that Abu Musa said: The Messenger of Allah said: 'There are three who will be given a twofold reward: A man who has a slave woman whom he disciplines and disciplines her well, and teaches and teaches her well, then he manumits her and marries her; a slave who fulfills his duty toward Allah and toward his masters; and a believer from among the People of the Book.'
