Abdullah bin 'Umar said: I heard the messenger of Allah say: 'When you see the crescent then fast, and when you see it, then stop fasting, and if it is obscured from you (too cloudy), then work it out (fro the beginning of the month, to complete thirty days) '

أَخْبَرَنَا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلَالَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَصُومُوا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَفْطِرُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ .

عبداللہ بن عمر رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے سنا: ”جب تم چاند دیکھو تو روزہ رکھو، اور جب ( شوال کا ) چاند دیکھو تو روزہ رکھنا بند کر دو، ( اور ) اگر تم پر مطلع ابر آلود ہو تو اس کا اندازہ لگاؤ“۔
