It was narrated that 'Umar bin Al-Khattab said: When 'Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Soul died, the Messenger of Allah was called upon to offer the funeral prayer for him. When the Messenger of Allah stood up (to offer the prayer), I got up quickly and said: 'O Messenger of Allah Are you going to pray for Ibn Ubayy when he said such-and-such an occasion?' And I stated to list all the things that he had said. The Messenger of Allah smiled and said: 'Leave me alone, O 'Umar.' When I spoke too much he said: 'I have been given the choice and I have chosen (to offer the prayer for him). If I knew that he could be forgiven by asking Allah's forgiveness more than seventy times, I would have done so.' The Messenger of Allah offered the funeral prayer for him, and then left. A short while later, the two Verses form surah Bara were revealed: 'And never pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave. Certainly they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and died while they were rebellious.' Later I was astonished by my audacity toward the Messenger of Allah on that day. And Allah and His Messenger know best.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قال:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا حُجَيْنُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قال:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قال:‏‏‏‏ لَمَّا مَاتَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ ابْنُ سَلُولَ دُعِيَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَثَبْتُ إِلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏ تُصَلِّي عَلَى ابْنِ أُبَيٍّ وَقَدْ قَالَ يَوْمَ كَذَا وَكَذَا كَذَا وَكَذَا أُعَدِّدُ عَلَيْهِ ؟ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَخِّرْ عَنِّي يَا عُمَرُ ،‏‏‏‏ فَلَمَّا أَكْثَرْتُ عَلَيْهِ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنِّي قَدْ خُيِّرْتُ فَاخْتَرْتُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَوْ عَلِمْتُ أَنِّي لَوْ زِدْتُ عَلَى السَّبْعِينَ غُفِرَ لَهُ لَزِدْتُ عَلَيْهَا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمْ يَمْكُثْ إِلَّا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى نَزَلَتِ الْآيَتَانِ مِنْ بَرَاءَةَ وَلا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا وَلا تَقُمْ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ سورة التوبة آية 84 فَعَجِبْتُ بَعْدُ مِنْ جُرْأَتِي عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَاللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ.

عمر بن خطاب رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ جب عبداللہ بن ابی ابن سلول ( منافقوں کا سردار ) مر گیا، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بلائے گئے، تاکہ آپ اس کی نماز جنازہ پڑھیں، جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ( نماز پڑھنے کے لیے ) کھڑے ہوئے تو میں تیزی سے آپ کی طرف بڑھا، اور عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! آپ ابن ابی پر نماز جنازہ پڑھیں گے؟ حالانکہ فلاں دن وہ ایسا ایسا کہہ رہا تھا، میں اس کی تمام باتیں آپ پر گنانے لگا، تو آپ مسکرائے، اور فرمایا: ”اے عمر! ان باتوں کو جانے دو“۔ جب میں نے کافی اصرار کیا تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”مجھے اختیار ہے ( نماز پڑھوں یا نہ پڑھوں ) تو میں نے پڑھنا پسند کیا، اگر میں یہ جانتا کہ ستر بار سے زیادہ مغفرت چاہنے پر اس کی مغفرت ہو جائے گی تو میں اس سے زیادہ مغفرت کرتا“ ۱؎ چنانچہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اس کی نماز جنازہ پڑھی، پھر لوٹے اور ابھی ذرا سا دم ہی لیا تھا کہ سورۃ برأت کی دونوں آیتیں نازل ہوئیں: «ولا تصل على أحد منهم مات أبدا ولا تقم على قبره إنهم كفروا باللہ ورسوله وماتوا وهم فاسقون» ”جب یہ مر جائیں تو تم ان میں سے کسی پر کبھی بھی نماز جنازہ نہ پڑھو، اور نہ اس کی قبر پہ کھڑے ہو، اس لیے کہ انہوں نے اللہ اور اس کے رسول کا انکار کیا ہے، اور گنہگار ہو کر مرے ہیں“، بعد میں مجھے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے خلاف اپنی اس دن کی اس جرات پر حیرت ہوئی، اور اللہ اور اس کے رسول خوب جانتے ہیں کہ یہ جرات میں نے کیوں کی۔

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah did not ofer gthe funeral prayer for shail bin Baida anywhere but in the Masjid.

It was narrated from 'Abdul-Wahid bin Hamzah that 'Abbad bin 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair told him that 'Aishah said: the Messenger of Allah did not offer the funeral prayer for Suhail bin Baida anywhere but inside the Masjid.

Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunaif said: A poor woman in Al-Awali fell sick and the Prophet used to ask them about her. He said: 'If she dies, do not bury her until I have offered the funeral prayer for her. She died and they brought her to Al-Madinah after dark, and they found that the Messenger of Allah had gone to sleep. They did not like to wake him up, so they offered the funeral prayer for her and buried her in Baqi' Al-Gharqab. The next morning they came and the Messenger of Allah asked them about her. They said: 'She has been buried, O Messenger of Allah. We came to you and found you sleeping, and we did not like to wake you up.' He said: 'let's go.' He set out walking and they went with him and showed him her grave. The Messenger of Allah stood and they formed rows behind him, and he offered the funeral prayer for her, saying the Takbir four times.

It was narrated from Jair that: the Messenger of Allah said: Your brother An-Najashi has died, so get up and offer the funeral prayer for him. He stood up and put us in rows as is done for the funeral prayer, and we prayed for him.
