It was narrated that Tawus said: Ibn Umar said: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about prayer at night. He said: Two by two, and if you fear that dawn will come, then one.'

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قال:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ حَبِيبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قال:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِذَا خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَوَاحِدَةٌ .

عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہم کہتے ہیں کہ ایک شخص نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے رات کی نماز کے بارے میں پوچھا، تو آپ نے فرمایا: دو دو رکعت ہے، اور جب تمہیں خدشہ ہو تو ایک رکعت پڑھ لو ۱؎۔

It was narrated from Salim, from his father, that : The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Prayers at night are two by two, then if you fear that dawn will come, pray witr with one rak'ah.
