Narrated Abu Saeed al-Khudri: I heard that the people asked the Prophet of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم: Water is brought for you from the well of Budaah. It is a well in which dead dogs, menstrual clothes and excrement of people are thrown. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم replied: Verily water is pure and is not defiled by anything. Abu Dawud said I heard Qutaibah bin Saeed say: I asked the person in charge of the well of Bud'ah about the depth of the well. He replied: At most the water reaches pubes. Then I asked: Where does it reach when its level goes down ? He replied: Below the private part of the body. Abu Dawud said: I measured the breadth of the well of Budaah with my sheet which I stretched over it. I them measured it with the hand. It measured six cubits in breadth. I then asked the man who opened the door of garden for me and admitted me to it: Has the condition of this well changed from what it had originally been in the past ? He replied: No. I saw the color of water in this well had changed.

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي شُعَيْبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْحَرَّانِيَّانِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَلِيطِ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ثُمَّ الْعَدَوِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يُقَالُ لَهُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّهُ يُسْتَقَى لَكَ مِنْ بِئْرِ بُضَاعَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهِيَ بِئْرٌ يُلْقَى فِيهَا لُحُومُ الْكِلَابِ وَالْمَحَايِضُ وَعَذِرُ النَّاسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ الْمَاءَ طَهُورٌ لَا يُنَجِّسُهُ شَيْءٌ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ وسَمِعْت قُتَيْبَةَ بْنَ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلْتُ قَيِّمَ بِئْرِ بُضَاعَةَ عَنْ عُمْقِهَا. قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَكْثَرُ مَا يَكُونُ فِيهَا الْمَاءُ إِلَى الْعَانَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ فَإِذَا نَقَصَ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ دُونَ الْعَوْرَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ وَقَدَّرْتُ أَنَا بِئْرَ بُضَاعَةَ بِرِدَائِي مَدَدْتُهُ عَلَيْهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ ذَرَعْتُهُ فَإِذَا عَرْضُهَا سِتَّةُ أَذْرُعٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَسَأَلْتُ الَّذِي فَتَحَ لِي بَابَ الْبُسْتَانِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَدْخَلَنِي إِلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏هَلْ غُيِّرَ بِنَاؤُهَا عَمَّا كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا. وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا مَاءً مُتَغَيِّرَ اللَّوْنِ.

ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو اس وقت یہ فرماتے سنا جب کہ آپ سے پوچھا جا رہا تھا کہ بئر بضاعہ ۱؎ سے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے لیے پانی لایا جاتا ہے، حالانکہ وہ ایسا کنواں ہے کہ اس میں کتوں کے گوشت، حیض کے کپڑے، اور لوگوں کے پاخانے ڈالے جاتے ہیں؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: پانی پاک ہے اسے کوئی چیز ناپاک نہیں کرتی ۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: میں نے قتیبہ بن سعید سے سنا وہ کہہ رہے تھے: میں نے بئر بضاعہ کے متولی سے اس کی گہرائی کے متعلق سوال کیا، تو انہوں نے جواب دیا: پانی جب زیادہ ہوتا ہے تو زیر ناف تک رہتا ہے، میں نے پوچھا: اور جب کم ہوتا ہے؟ تو انہوں نے جواباً کہا: تو ستر یعنی گھٹنے سے نیچے رہتا ہے۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: میں نے بئر بضاعہ کو اپنی چادر سے ناپا، چادر کو اس پر پھیلا دیا، پھر اسے اپنے ہاتھ سے ناپا، تو اس کا عرض ( ۶ ) ہاتھ نکلا، میں نے باغ والے سے پوچھا، جس نے باغ کا دروازہ کھول کر مجھے اندر داخل کیا: کیا بئر بضاعہ کی بناوٹ و شکل میں پہلے کی نسبت کچھ تبدیلی ہوئی ہے؟ اس نے کہا: نہیں۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: میں نے دیکھا کہ پانی کا رنگ بدلا ہوا تھا۔

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: One of the wives of the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم took a bath from a large bowl. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wanted to perform ablution or take from the water left over. She said to him: O Prophet of Allah, verily I was sexually defiled. The Prophet said: Water not defiled.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: None amongst you should urinate in stagnant water, and then wash in it.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: None amongst you should urinate in standing water, then wash in it after sexual defilement.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: The purification of the utensil belonging to any one of you, after it has been licked by a dog, consists of washing it seven times, using sand in the first instance. Abu Dawud said: A similar tradition has been narrated by Abu Ayyub and Habib bin al-Shahid on the authority of Muhammad.

A similar tradition has been transmitted by Abu Hurairah through a different chain of narrators. But this version has been narrated as a statement of Abu Hurairah himself and not attributed to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. The version has the addition of the words: If the cat licks (a utensil), it should be washed once.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying: When a dog licks a (thing contained in a) utensil you must wash it seven times, using earth (sand) for the seventh time. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been transmitted by another chain of narrators in which there is no mention of earth.
