Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: When one of the Jews greets you saying: Death may come upon you, reply: The same to you. Abu Dawud said: Malik bin Adb Allah bin Dinar transmitted it in a similar manner, and al-Thawri transmitted it from Abdullah bin Dinar. He said in this version: The same to you.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ،‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُسْلِمٍ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ،‏‏‏‏ أَنَّهُ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ،‏‏‏‏ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ:‏‏‏‏ وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ مَالِكٌ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَرَوَاهُ الثَّوْرِيُّ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ،‏‏‏‏ قال فِيهِ،‏‏‏‏ وَعَلَيْكُمْ.

عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: جب کوئی یہودی تمہیں سلام کرے اور وہ «السام عليكم» ( تمہارے لیے ہلاکت ہو ) کہے تو تم اس کے جواب میں «وعليكم» کہہ دیا کرو ( یعنی تمہارے اوپر موت و ہلاکت آئے ) ۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: اسے مالک نے عبداللہ بن دینار سے اسی طرح روایت کیا ہے، اور ثوری نے بھی عبداللہ بن دینار سے «وعليكم» ہی کا لفظ روایت کیا ہے۔

Anas said: The Companions of the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said to the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم: The people of the Book salute us. How should we reply to them? He said: say: the same to you.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: When one of you comes to an assembly, he should give a salutation and if he feels inclined to get up, he should give a salutation, for the former is not more of a duty than the latter.

Narrated Abu Jurayy al-Hujaymi: I came to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم and said: Upon you be peace, Messenger of Allah! He said: Do not say: Upon you be peace, for Upon you be peace is the salutation to the dead.

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: Abu Dawud said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali traced this tradition back to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم: When people are passing by, it is enough if one of them gives a salutation on their behalf, and that it is enough for those who are sitting if one of them replies.

Narrated Al-Bara ibn Azib: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: If two Muslims meet, shake hands, praise Allah, and ask Him for forgiveness, they will be forgiven.
