Saad bin Abi Waqqas said: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم gave some people and did not give anything to a man of them. Saad said: Messenger of Allah! You gave so and so, so and so, but did not give anything to so and so while he is a believer. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: Or he is a Muslim. Saad repeated it thrice and the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم then said: I give some people and leave him who is dearer to me than them. I do not give him anything fearing lest he should fall into Hell on his face.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَأَخْبَرَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاص، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَعْطَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رِجَالًا وَلَمْ يُعْطِ رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ شَيْئًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَعْطَيْتَ فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا وَلَمْ تُعْطِ فُلَانًا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ أَوْ مُسْلِمٌ حَتَّى أَعَادَهَا سَعْدٌ ثَلَاثًا وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ أَوْ مُسْلِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنِّي أُعْطِي رِجَالًا وَأَدَعُ مَنْ هُوَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْهُمْ لَا أُعْطِيهِ شَيْئًا مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يُكَبُّوا فِي النَّارِ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ .

سعد بن ابی وقاص رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے کچھ لوگوں کو دیا اور ان میں سے ایک شخص کو کچھ نہیں دیا تو سعد نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! آپ نے فلاں اور فلاں کو دیا لیکن فلاں کو کچھ بھی نہیں دیا حالانکہ وہ مومن ہے، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: یا مسلم ہے سعد نے تین بار یہی عرض کیا اور نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کہتے رہے: یا مسلم ہے پھر آپ نے فرمایا: میں بعض لوگوں کو دیتا ہوں اور ان میں تجھے جو زیادہ محبوب ہے اسے چھوڑ دیتا ہوں، میں اسے کچھ بھی نہیں دیتا، ایسا اس اندیشے سے کہ کہیں وہ جہنم میں اوندھے منہ نہ ڈال دیئے جائیں ۱؎ ۔

Explaining the verse, “say ; You have no faith, but you only say: We have submitted our wills to Allah”, Al-Zuhri said: We think that ISLAM is a word, and faith is an action.

Saad said: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم distributed (spoils) among the people I said to him: Give so and so for he is a believer. He said: Or he is a Muslim. I give a man something while another man is dearer to me than him, fearing that he may fall into Hell on his face.

Abdullah bin Amr reported the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying: Four characteristics constitute anyone who possesses them a sheer hypocrite, and anyone who possesses one of them possesses a characteristics of hypocrisy till he abandons it: when he talks he lies, when he makes a promise he violates it, when he makes a covenant he acts treacherously, and when he quarrels, he deviates from the Truth.

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying: When one commits fornication, one is not a believer ; when one steals, one is not a believer ; when one drinks, one is not a believer ; and repentance is placed before him.
