Narrated Ibn Abbas: The people of the Book used to let their hair hand down, and the polytheists used to part their hair. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم like to confirm with the People of the Book in the matters about which he had received no command. Hence he Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم let his forelock hang down but afterwards he parted it.
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ يَعْنِي يَسْدِلُونَ أَشْعَارَهُمْ وَكَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ يَفْرُقُونَ رُءُوسَهُمْ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تُعْجِبُهُ مُوَافَقَةُ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فِيمَا لَمْ يُؤْمَرْ بِهِ فَسَدَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَاصِيَتَهُ ثُمَّ فَرَقَ بَعْدُ .
عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ   اہل کتاب اپنے بالوں کا «سدل» کرتے یعنی انہیں لٹکا ہوا چھوڑ دیتے تھے، اور مشرکین اپنے سروں میں مانگ نکالتے تھے، اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو جن باتوں میں کوئی حکم نہ ملتا اہل کتاب کی موافقت پسند فرماتے تھے اسی لیے آپ اپنی پیشانی کے بالوں کو لٹکا چھوڑ دیتے تھے پھر بعد میں آپ مانگ نکالنے لگے۔

Narrated Wail ibn Hujr: I came to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم and I had long hair. When the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم saw me, he said: Evil, evil! He said: I then returned and cut them off. I then came to him in the morning. He said (to me): I did not intend to do evil to you. This is much better.
