Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: A man paid in advance for a palm-tree. It did not bear fruit that year. They brought their case for decision to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. He said: for which do you make his property lawful? He then said: Do not pay in advance for a palm-tree till they (the fruits) were clearly in good condition.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ رَجُلٍ نَجْرَانِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَسْلَفَ رَجُلًا فِي نَخْلٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمْ تُخْرِجْ تِلْكَ السَّنَةَ شَيْئًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَاخْتَصَمَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ بِمَ تَسْتَحِلُّ مَالَهُ ارْدُدْ عَلَيْهِ مَالَهُ ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا تُسْلِفُوا فِي النَّخْلِ حَتَّى يَبْدُوَ صَلَاحُهُ .
عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ   ایک شخص نے ایک شخص سے کھجور کے ایک خاص درخت کے پھل کی بیع سلف کی، تو اس سال اس درخت میں کچھ بھی پھل نہ آیا تو وہ دونوں اپنا جھگڑا لے کر نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس پہنچے، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے بیچنے والے سے فرمایا: تم کس چیز کے بدلے اس کا مال اپنے لیے حلال کرنے پر تلے ہوئے ہو؟ اس کا مال اسے لوٹا دو پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: کھجوروں میں جب تک وہ قابل استعمال نہ ہو جائیں سلف نہ کرو ۔

Narrated Abu Saeed Al Khudri: In the time of the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم a man suffered loss affecting fruits he had bought and owed a large debt, so the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: Give him sadaqah (alms). So the people gave him sadaqah (alms), but as that was not enough to pay the debt in full, the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: Take what you find. But that is all you may have.
