Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم made a speech one day and mentioned a man from among his Companions who died and was shrouded in a shroud of bad quality, and was buried at night. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم rebuked that man be buried at night until prayer was offered over him, except that a man was forced to do that. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: When one of you shrouds his brother, he should use a shroud of good quality.

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ:‏‏‏‏ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يُحَدِّثُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنَّهُ خَطَبَ يَوْمًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَذَكَرَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ قُبِضَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَكُفِّنَ فِي كَفَنٍ غَيْرِ طَائِلٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقُبِرَ لَيْلًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَزَجَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُقْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ بِاللَّيْلِ. حتَّى يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِلَّا أَنْ يَضْطَرَّ إِنْسَانٌ إِلَى ذَلِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا كَفَّنَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَخَاهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلْيُحْسِنْ كَفَنَهُ .

ابوالزبیر کہتے ہیں کہ انہوں نے جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہما کو نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے روایت کرتے سنا کہ ایک دن آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے خطبہ دیا جس میں اپنے اصحاب میں سے ایک شخص کا ذکر کیا جن کا انتقال ہو گیا تھا، انہیں ناقص کفن دیا گیا، اور رات میں دفن کیا گیا تھا، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے لوگوں کو ڈانٹا کہ رات میں کسی کو جب تک اس پر نماز جنازہ نہ پڑھ لی جائے مت دفناؤ، إلا یہ کہ انسان کو انتہائی مجبوری ہو اور نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ( یہ بھی ) فرمایا: جب تم میں سے کوئی اپنے بھائی کو کفن دے تو اچھا کفن دے ۔

Narrated Aishah: That the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was shrouded in a garment of Yemeni stuff, it was then removed from him.

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: When one of you dies, and he possesses something, he should be shrouded in the garment of the Yemeni stuff.

Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was shrouded in three garments of white Yemeni stuff, among which was neither a shirt nor a turban.

A similar tradition has been transmitted by Aishah through a different chain of narrators. This version adds: of cotton . The narrator said: Aishah was told that the people said that he was shrouded in two garments and one cloak. She replied: A cloak was brought but they returned it and did not shroud him in it.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was shrouded in three garments made in Najran: two garments and one shirt in which he died. Abu Dawud said: The narrator Uthman said: In three garments: two red garments and a shirt in which he died.

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: Do not be extravagant in shrouding, for I heard the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم say: Do not be extravagant in shrouding, for it will be quickly decayed.
