Awf bin malik Al Ashjai said “I went out with Zaid bin Harith in the battle of Mutah. For the reinforcement of the Muslim army a man from the people of Yemen accompanied me. He had only his sword with him. A man from the Muslims slaughtered a Camel. The man for the reinforcement asked him for a part of its skin which he gave him. He made it like the shape of a shield. We went on and met the Byzantine armies. There was a man among them on a reddish horse with a golden saddle and golden weapons. This Byzantinian soldiers began to attack the Muslims desperately. The man for reinforcement sat behind a rock for (attacking) him. He hamstrung his horse and overpowered him and then killed him. He took his horse and weapons. When Allah, Most High, bestowed victory on the Muslims. Khalid bin Al Walid sent for him and took his spoils. Awf said “I came to him and said “Khalid, do you know that the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم had decided to give spoils to the killer? He said “Yes, I thought it abundant. I said “You should return it to him, or I shall tell you about it before the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. But he refused to return it. Awf said “We then assembled with the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. I told him the story of the man of reinforcement and what Khalid had done. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said “Khalid, what made you do the work you have done?” He said “Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم, I considered it to be abundant. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said “Khalid, return it to him what you have taken from him. ” Awf said “I said to him “here you are, Khalid. Did I not keep my word? The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said “What is that? I then informed him. ” He said “The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم became angry and said “Khalid, do not return it to him. Are you going to leave my commanders? You may take from them what is best for you and eave to them what is worst.

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الأَشْجَعِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ خَرَجْتُ مَعَ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ فِي غَزْوَةِ مُؤْتَةَ فَرَافَقَنِي مَدَدِيٌّ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْيَمَنِ لَيْسَ مَعَهُ غَيْرُ سَيْفِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَنَحَرَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ جَزُورًا فَسَأَلَهُ الْمَدَدِيُّ طَائِفَةً مِنْ جِلْدِهِ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ فَاتَّخَذَهُ كَهَيْئَةِ الدَّرْقِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَضَيْنَا فَلَقِينَا جُمُوعَ الرُّومِ وَفِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ عَلَى فَرَسٍ لَهُ أَشْقَرَ عَلَيْهِ سَرْجٌ مُذْهَبٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَسِلَاحٌ مُذْهَبٌ فَجَعَلَ الرُّومِيُّ يُغْرِي بِالْمُسْلِمِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَعَدَ لَهُ الْمَدَدِيُّ خَلْفَ صَخْرَةٍ فَمَرَّ بِهِ الرُّومِيُّ فَعَرْقَبَ فَرَسَهُ فَخَرَّ وَعَلَاهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَتَلَهُ وَحَازَ فَرَسَهُ وَسِلَاحَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ بَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَأَخَذَ مِنَ السَّلَبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ عَوْفٌ:‏‏‏‏ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا خَالِدُ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَضَى بِالسَّلَبِ لِلْقَاتِلِ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ بَلَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَكِنِّي اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ لَتَرُدَّنَّهُ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَوْ لَأُعَرِّفَنَّكَهَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ عَوْفٌ:‏‏‏‏ فَاجْتَمَعْنَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَصَصْتُ عَلَيْهِ قِصَّةَ الْمَدَدِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَا فَعَلَ خَالِدٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا خَالِدُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا خَالِدُ رُدَّ عَلَيْهِ مَا أَخَذْتَ مِنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ عَوْفٌ:‏‏‏‏ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ دُونَكَ يَا خَالِدُ أَلَمْ أَفِ لَكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ وَمَا ذَلِكَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا خَالِدُ لَا تَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ تَارِكُونَ لِي أُمَرَائِي لَكُمْ صَفْوَةُ أَمْرِهِمْ وَعَلَيْهِمْ كَدَرُهُ ؟ .

عوف بن مالک اشجعی رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں زید بن حارثہ رضی اللہ عنہ کے ساتھ غزوہ موتہ میں نکلا تو اہل یمن میں سے ایک مددی میرے ساتھ ہو گیا، اس کے پاس ایک تلوار کے سوا کچھ نہ تھا، پھر ایک مسلمان نے کچھ اونٹ ذبح کئے تو مددی نے اس سے تھوڑی سی کھال مانگی، اس نے اسے دے دی، مددی نے اس کھال کو ڈھال کی شکل کا بنا لیا، ہم چلے تو رومی فوجیوں سے ملے، ان میں ایک شخص اپنے سرخ گھوڑے پر سوار تھا، اس پر ایک سنہری زین تھی، ہتھیار بھی سنہرا تھا، تو رومی مسلمانوں کے خلاف لڑنے کے لیے اکسانے لگا تو مددی اس سوار کی تاک میں ایک چٹان کی آڑ میں بیٹھ گیا، وہ رومی ادھر سے گزرا تو مددی نے اس کے گھوڑے کے پاؤں کاٹ ڈالے، وہ گر پڑا، اور مددی اس پر چڑھ بیٹھا اور اسے قتل کر کے گھوڑا اور ہتھیار لے لیا، پھر جب اللہ عزوجل نے مسلمانوں کو فتح دی تو خالد بن ولید رضی اللہ عنہ نے مددی کے پاس کسی کو بھیاد اور سامان میں سے کچھ لے لیا۔ عوف رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: تو میں خالد رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس آیا اور میں نے کہا: خالد! کیا تم نہیں جانتے ہو کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے قاتل کے لیے سلب کا فیصلہ کیا ہے؟ خالد رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: کیوں نہیں، میں جانتا ہوں لیکن میں نے اسے زیادہ سمجھا، تو میں نے کہا: تم یہ سامان اس کو دے دو، ورنہ میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے اس معاملہ کو ذکر کروں گا، لیکن خالد رضی اللہ عنہ نے لوٹانے سے انکار کیا۔ عوف رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: ہم لوگ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس اکٹھا ہوئے تو میں نے آپ سے مددی کا واقعہ اور خالد رضی اللہ عنہ کی سلوک بیان کیا، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: خالد! تم نے جو یہ کام کیا ہے اس پر تمہیں کس چیز نے آمادہ کیا؟ خالد نے کہا: اللہ کے رسول! میں نے اسے زیادہ جانا، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: خالد! تم نے جو کچھ لیا تھا واپس لوٹا دو ۔ عوف رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں میں نے کہا: خالد! کیا میں نے جو وعدہ کیا تھا اسے پورا نہ کیا؟ تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: وہ کیا ہے؟ عوف رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: میں نے اسے آپ سے بتایا۔ عوف کہتے ہیں: تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم غصہ ہو گئے، اور فرمایا: خالد! واپس نہ دو، کیا تم لوگ چاہتے ہو کہ میرے امیروں کو چھوڑ دو کہ وہ جو اچھا کام کریں اس سے تم نفع اٹھاؤ اور بری بات ان پر ڈال دیا کرو ۔

Narrated Awf ibn Malik al-Ashjai ; Khalid ibn al-Walid: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم gave judgement that the killer should have what was taken from the man he killed, and did not make this subject to division into fifths.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Masud: At the battle of Badr the Messenger of Allah gave me Abu Jahl's sword, as I had killed him.

Narrated Saeed ibn al-As: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم sent Abu Saeed ibn al-As with an expedition from Madina towards Najd. Aban ibn Saeed and his companions came to the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم at Khaybar after it had been captured. The girths of their horses were made of palm fibres. Aban said: Give us a share (from the booty), Messenger of Allah. Abu Hurairah said: I said: Do not give them a share, Messenger of Allah. Aban said: Why are you talking so, Wabr. You have come to us from the peak of Dal. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: Sit down, Aban. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم did not give any share to them (from the booty).

Abu Hurairah said “I came to Madeenah when the Abu Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was in Khaibar, after it was captured. I asked him to give me a share from the booty. A son of Saeed bin Al ‘As spoke and said “Do not give him any share, Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. I said “This is the killer of Ibn Qauqal. ” (The son of) Saeed bin Al ‘As said “Oh, how wonderful! A Wabr who came down to us from the peak of Dal blames me of having killed a Muslim whom Allaah honored at my hands and did not disgrace me at his hands. Abu Dawud said “They were about ten persons. Six of them were killed and the remaining returned.

Abu Nusa said “We arrived just at the moment when the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم conquered Khaibar and he allotted us a portion (or he said he gave us some of it). He allotted nothing to anyone who was not present at the conquest of Khaybar, giving shares only to those who were present with him except for those who were in our ship, Jafar and his companions to whom he gave (a portion) something along with them.
