Jabir said “We went out along with the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم raising our voices in talbiyah for Hakk alone (Ifrad) while Aishah raised her voice in talbiyah for an ‘Umrah. When she reached Sarif, she menstruated. When we came to (Makkah) we circumambulated the Kaabah and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم then commanded us that those who had not brought sacrificial animals withthem should put off their ihram (after ‘Umrah). We asked “Which acts are lawful (and which not)? He replied All acts are lawful (that are permissible usually). We had therefore intercourse with our wives, used perfumes, put on our clothes. There remained only four days to perform Hajj at ‘Arafah. We then raised our voice in talbiyah (wearing Ihram for Hajj) on the eighth of Dhu al Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم entered upon Aishah and found her weeping. He said What is the matter with you? My problem is that I have menstruated, while the people have put on their ihram but I have not done so, nor did I go round the House (the Kaabah). Now the people are proceeding for Hajj. He said This is a thing destined by Allah to the daughters of Adam. Take a bath, then raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj (i. e, wear ihram for Hajj). She took a abtah and performed all the rites of the Hajj (lit. she stayed at all those places where the pilgrims stay). When she was purified, she circumambulated the House (the Kaabah), and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. He (the Prophet) said “Now you have performed both your Hajj and your ‘Umrah. She said Messenger of Allah, I have some misgiving in my mind that I did not go round the Kaabah when I performed Hajj (in the beginning). He said Abd al Rahman (her brother), take her and have her perform ‘Umrah from Al Tan’im. This happened on the night of Al Hasbah (i. e., the fourteenth of Dhu Al Hijjah).

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَابِرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَقْبَلْنَا مُهِلِّينَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْحَجِّ مُفْرَدًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَقْبَلَتْ عَائِشَةُ مُهِلَّةً بِعُمْرَةٍ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بِسَرِفَ عَرَكَتْ حَتَّى إِذَا قَدِمْنَا طُفْنَا بِالْكَعْبَةِ وَ بِالصَّفَا وَ الْمَرْوَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُحِلَّ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهُ هَدْيٌ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَقُلْنَا:‏‏‏‏ حِلُّ مَاذَا ؟ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ الْحِلُّ كُلُّهُ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَوَاقَعْنَا النِّسَاءَ وَتَطَيَّبْنَا بِالطِّيبِ وَلَبِسْنَا ثِيَابَنَا وَلَيْسَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ عَرَفَةَ إِلَّا أَرْبَعُ لَيَالٍ ثُمَّ أَهْلَلْنَا يَوْمَ التَّرْوِيَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَوَجَدَهَا تَبْكِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا شَأْنُكِ ؟ قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ شَأْنِي أَنِّي قَدْ حِضْتُ وَقَدْ حَلَّ النَّاسُ وَلَمْ أَحْلُلْ وَلَمْ أَطُفْ بِالْبَيْتِ وَالنَّاسُ يَذْهَبُونَ إِلَى الْحَجِّ الْآنَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ هَذَا أَمْرٌ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَاغْتَسِلِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أَهِلِّي بِالْحَجِّ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَفَعَلَتْ وَوَقَفَتِ الْمَوَاقِفَ حَتَّى إِذَا طَهُرَتْ طَافَتْ بِالْبَيْتِ وَ بِالصَّفَا وَ الْمَرْوَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَدْ حَلَلْتِ مِنْ حَجِّكِ وَعُمْرَتِكِ جَمِيعًا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِنِّي أَجِدُ فِي نَفْسِي أَنِّي لَمْ أَطُفْ بِالْبَيْتِ حِينَ حَجَجْتُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَاذْهَبْ بِهَا يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَأَعْمِرْهَا مِنْ التَّنْعِيمِ وَذَلِكَ لَيْلَةُ الْحَصْبَةِ .

جابر رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ ہم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ حج افراد کا احرام باندھ کر آئے، ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا عمرے کا احرام باندھ کر آئیں، جب وہ مقام سرف میں پہنچیں تو انہیں حیض آ گیا یہاں تک کہ جب ہم لوگ مکہ پہنچے تو ہم نے کعبۃ اللہ کا طواف کیا اور صفا و مروہ کے درمیان سعی کی، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں حکم دیا کہ ہم میں سے جن کے پاس ہدی نہ ہو وہ احرام کھول دیں، ہم نے کہا: کیا کیا چیزیں حلال ہوں گی؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ہر چیز حلال ہے ، چنانچہ ہم نے عورتوں سے صحبت کی، خوشبو لگائی، اپنے کپڑے پہنے حالانکہ عرفہ میں صرف چار راتیں باقی تھیں، پھر ہم نے یوم الترویہ ( آٹھویں ذی الحجہ ) کو احرام باندھا، پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا کے پاس آئے تو انہیں روتے پایا، پوچھا: کیا بات ہے؟ ، وہ بولیں: مجھے حیض آ گیا لوگوں نے احرام کھول دیا لیکن میں نے نہیں کھولا اور نہ میں بیت اللہ کا طواف ہی کر سکی ہوں، اب لوگ حج کے لیے جا رہے ہیں، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: یہ ( حیض ) ایسی چیز ہے جسے اللہ نے آدم کی بیٹیوں کے لیے لکھ دیا ہے لہٰذا تم غسل کر لو پھر حج کا احرام باندھ لو ، چنانچہ انہوں نے ایسا ہی کیا، اور سارے ارکان ادا کئے جب حیض سے پاک ہو گئیں تو بیت اللہ کا طواف کیا، اور صفا و مروہ کی سعی کی، پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اب تم حج اور عمرہ دونوں سے حلال ہو گئیں ، وہ بولیں: اللہ کے رسول! میرے دل میں خیال آتا ہے کہ میں بیت اللہ کا طواف ( قدوم ) نہیں کر سکی ہوں، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: عبدالرحمٰن! انہیں لے جاؤ، اور تنعیم سے عمرہ کرا لاؤ ، یہ واقعہ حصبہ ۱؎ کی رات کا تھا۔

The aforesaid tradition has also been transmitted by Jabir through a different chain of narrators. This version has The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said “Raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj and then perform Hajj, and do so all the pilgrims do, except that you should not circumambulate the Hose (the Kaabah) and should not pray.

Jabir bin Abdullah said “We raised our voices in talbiyah along with the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم exclusively for Hajj, not combining anything with it. When we came to Makkah four days of Dhu al Hijjah had already passed. We the circumambulated (the Kaabah) and ran between Al Safa’ and Al Marwah. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم then commanded us to put off ihram. He said if I had not brought the sacrificial animals, I would have taken off Ihram. Suraqah bin Malik then stood up and said Messenger of Allah, what do you think, have you provided this facility to us for this year alone or forever? The Messenger of Allah said No, this forever and forever. Al Awza’l said I heard Ata bin Abi Rabah narrating this tradition, but I did not memorize it till I met Ibn Juraij who confirmed it for me.

Jabir said The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم and his companions came to Makkah on the fourth of Dhu Al Hijjah. When they circumambulated the Kaabah and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said Change this (Hajj) into ‘Umrah, except those who have brought the sacrificial animals with them. When the eighth of Dhul Al Hijjah came, they raised their voices in talbiyah for Hall. When the tenth of Dhul Al Hijjah came, they circumambulated the Kaabah, but did not run between al Safa’ and Al Marwah.

Jabir bin Abdullah said The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم and his companions raised their voices in talbiyah for Hajj. No one of them had brought the sacrificial animals with them except the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم and Talhah. Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) had returned from Yemen and had brought sacrificial animals with him. He said I raised my voice in talbiyah for which the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم raised his voice. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم commanded his companions to change it into ‘Umrah and clip their hair after running (between Al Safa’ and Al Marwah), and then take off their ihram except those who brought the sacrificial animals with them. They remarked should we go to Mina with our penises dripping with prostatic fluid? These remarks reached the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. Thereupon he said “had I known before hand about my affair what I have come to know later, I would not have brought sacrificial animals. Had I not brought sacrificial animals with me, I would have put off my ihram. “

Ibn Abbas reported the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying This is an ‘Umrah from which we have benefitted. Anyone who has brought sacrificial animal with him should take off ihram totally. ‘Umrah has been included in Hajj till the Day of Judgment. Abu Dawud said This is a munkar (uncommon) tradition. This is in fact the statement of Ibn Abbas himself.

Ibn Abbas reported the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying If a man raises his voice in talbiya for Hajj, then he comes to Makkah, goes round the House (the Kaabah) and runs between Al Safa’ and Al Marwah he may take off his ihram. That will be considered as ihram for ‘Umrah. Abu Dawud said Ibn Juraij narrated from a man on the authority of Ata that the companions of the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم entered Makkah raising their voices in talbiyah for Hajj alone, but the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم changed it to ‘Umrah.
