Abdur Rahman ibn Masud said: Sahl ibn Abu Hathmah came to our gathering. He said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم commanding us said: When you estimate take them leaving a third, and if you do not leave or find a third, leave a quarter.
حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ خُبَيْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ جَاءَ سَهْلُ بْنُ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ إِلَى مَجْلِسِنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا خَرَصْتُمْ فَجُذُّوا وَدَعُوا الثُّلُثَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنْ لَمْ تَدَعُوا أَوْ تَجُذُّوا الثُّلُثَ فَدَعُوا الرُّبْعَ . قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ الْخَارِصُ يَدَعُ الثُّلُثَ لِلْحِرْفَةِ.
عبدالرحمٰن بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   سہل بن ابی حثمہ رضی اللہ عنہ ہماری مجلس میں تشریف لائے، انہوں نے کہا: ہمیں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے حکم دیا ہے کہ جب تم پھلوں کا تخمینہ کر لو تب انہیں کاٹو اور ایک تہائی چھوڑ دیا کرو اگر تم ایک تہائی نہ چھوڑ سکو تو ایک چوتھائی ہی چھوڑ دیا کرو ۱؎۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: اندازہ لگانے والا ایک تہائی بیج بونے وغیرہ جیسے کاموں کے لیے چھوڑ دے گا، اس کی زکاۃ نہیں لے گا۔

Narrated Awf ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم entered upon us in the mosque, and he had a stick in his hand. A man hung there a bunch of hashaf. He struck the bunch with the stick, and said: If the owner of this sadaqah (alms) wishes to give a better one than it, he would give. The owner of this sadaqah will eat hashaf on the Day of Judgment.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم prescribed the sadaqah (alms) relating to the breaking of the fast as a purification of the fasting from empty and obscene talk and as food for the poor. If anyone pays it before the prayer (ofEidd), it will be accepted as zakat. If anyone pays it after the prayer, that will be a sadaqah like other sadaqahs (alms).
