Abu Hurairah said: My friend (i. e. the Prophet) instructed me to observe three practices that I do not leave while traveling nor while resident, to pray two rak'ahs in the forenoon, to fast three days every month and not to sleep but after observing the with.
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ مِنْ أَزْدِ شَنُوءَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِثَلَاثٍ لَا أَدَعُهُنَّ فِي سَفَرٍ وَلَا حَضَرٍ:‏‏‏‏ رَكْعَتَيِ الضُّحَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَصَوْمِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنْ لَا أَنَامَ إِلَّا عَلَى وِتْرٍ .
ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   مجھے میرے خلیل ( یار، صادق، محمد ) صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے تین باتوں کی وصیت کی ہے، جن کو میں سفر اور حضر کہیں بھی نہیں چھوڑتا: چاشت کی دو رکعتیں، ہر ماہ تین دن کے روزے اور وتر پڑھے بغیر نہ سونے کی ۱؎۔

But he used to observe the witr just before the dawn when he died.

Abdullah bin Abu Qais said: I asked Aishah about the witr observes by the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. She replied: Sometime he observed the witr prayer in the early hours of the night, sometimes he observed it at the end of it. I asked: How did he recite the Quran ? Did he recite the Quran quietly or loudly ? She replied: He did it in any way. Sometimes he recited quietly and sometimes loudly, sometimes he took bath and then slept and sometimes he performed ablution and then slept. Abu Dawud said: The narrators other than Qutaibah said: This refer to his bath due to sexual defilement.
