Narrated Al-Hasan ibn Ali: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم taught me some words that I say during the witr. (The version of Ibn Jawwas has: I say them in the supplication of the witr. ) They were: O Allah, guide me among those Thou hast guided, grant me security among those Thou hast granted security, take me into Thy charge among those Thou hast taken into Thy charge, bless me in what Thou hast given, guard me from the evil of what Thou hast decreed, for Thou dost decree, and nothing is decreed for Thee. He whom Thou befriendest is not humbled. Blessed and Exalted art Thou, our Lord.

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ جَوَّاسٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ بُرَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي الْحَوْرَاءِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا:‏‏‏‏ عَلَّمَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَلِمَاتٍ أَقُولُهُنَّ فِي الْوِتْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ ابْنُ جَوَّاسٍ:‏‏‏‏ فِي قُنُوتِ الْوِتْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي فِيمَنْ هَدَيْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَافِنِي فِيمَنْ عَافَيْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَتَوَلَّنِي فِيمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقِنِي شَرَّ مَا قَضَيْتَ إِنَّكَ تَقْضِي وَلَا يُقْضَى عَلَيْكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنَّهُ لَا يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَا يَعِزُّ مَنْ عَادَيْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏تَبَارَكْتَ رَبَّنَا وَتَعَالَيْتَ .

حسن بن علی رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے مجھے چند کلمات سکھائے جنہیں میں وتر میں کہا کرتا ہوں ( ابن جواس کی روایت میں ہے جنہیں میں وتر کے قنوت میں کہا کروں ) وہ کلمات یہ ہیں: «اللهم اهدني فيمن هديت، وعافني فيمن عافيت، وتولني فيمن توليت، وبارك لي فيما أعطيت، وقني شر ما قضيت إنك تقضي ولا يقضى عليك، وإنه لا يذل من واليت، ولا يعز من عاديت، تباركت ربنا وتعاليت» ۱؎۔ اے اللہ! مجھے ہدایت دے ان لوگوں میں ( داخل کر کے ) جن کو تو نے ہدایت دی ہے اور مجھے عافیت دے ان لوگوں میں ( داخل کر کے ) جن کو تو نے عافیت دی ہے اور میری کارسازی فرما ان لوگوں میں ( داخل کر کے ) جن کی تو نے کارسازی کی ہے اور مجھے میرے لیے اس چیز میں برکت دے جو تو نے عطا کی ہے اور مجھے اس چیز کی برائی سے بچا جو تو نے مقدر کی ہے، تو فیصلہ کرتا ہے اور تیرے خلاف فیصلہ نہیں کیا جا سکتا۔ جسے تو دوست رکھے وہ ذلیل نہیں ہو سکتا اور جس سے تو دشمنی رکھے وہ عزت نہیں پا سکتا، اے ہمارے رب تو بابرکت اور بلند و بالا ہے ۔

The aforesaid tradition has been transmitted by Abu Ishaq with the same chain and to the same effect. In the last of this tradition he said: The version has the words: He would recite the supplication of the with. He did not mention the words: I say them in the with. Abu Dawud said: The name of Abu al-Hawra' is Rabiah bin Shaiban.

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to say at the end of his witr: O Allah, I seek refuge in Thy good pleasure from Thy anger, and in Thy forgiveness from Thy punishment, and I seek refuge in Thy mercy from Thy wrath. I cannot reckon the praise due to Thee. Thou art as Thou hast praised Thyself. Abu Dawud said: Hisham is the earliest teacher of Hammad. Yahya bin Main said: No one is reported to have narrated traditions form him except Hammad bin Salamah. Abu Dawud said: Ubayy bin Kab said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم recited supplication in the witr before bowing. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has also been narrated by 'Isa bin Yunus through a different chain of narrators from Ubayy bin Kab. He also narrated it through a different chain of narrators on the authority of Ubayy bin Kab that the Messenger of Allah (saw) recited the supplication in the witr before bowing. Abu Dawud said: The chain of narrators of the tradition of Saeed from Qatadah goes: Yazid bin Zurai' narrated from Saeed, from Qatadah, from 'Azrah, from Saeed bin Abdur-Rahman bin Abza, on the authority of his father, from the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. This version does not mention the supplication and the name of Ubayy. This tradition has also been narrated by Abd al-A'la and Muhammad bin Bishr al-Abdi. He heard the traditions from 'Isa bin Yunus at Kufah. They did not mention the supplication in their version. This tradition has also been narrated by Hisham al-Dastuwa'i and Shubah from Qatadah. They did not mention the supplication in their version. The tradition of Zubaid has been narrated by Sulaiman al-Amash, Shubah, Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sulaiman, and Jarir bin Hazim; all of them narrated on the authority of Zubaid. None of them mention the supplication in his version, except in the tradition transmitted by Hafs bin Ghiyath from Misar from Zubaid; he narrated in his version that he (the Prophet) recited supplication before bowing. Abu Dawud said: This version of tradition is not well know. There is doubt that Hafs might have narrated this tradition from some other narrator than Misar. Abu Dawud said: It is reported that Ubayy (b. Kab) used to recited the supplication )in the witr) in the second half of Ramadan.

Muhammad reported on the authority of some of his teachers that Ubayy bin Kab led them in prayer during Ramadan. He used to recite the supplication (in the with) during the second half of Ramadan.

Narrated Ubayy ibn Kab: Al-Hasan reported: Umar ibn al-Khattab gathered the people (in tarawih prayer) behind Ubayy ibn Kab (who led them). He used to lead them for twenty days (during Ramadan, and would not recite the supplication except in the second half of it (i. e. Ramadan). When the last ten days remained, he kept away from them, and prayed in his house. They used to say: Ubayy ran away. Abu Dawud said: This tradition shows that whatever has been reported about the recitation of the supplication is not tenable. Moreover, these two traditions from Ubayy bin Kab indicate that another tradition which tells that the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم recited the supplication in the witr is weak.

Narrated Ubayy ibn Kab: When the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم offered salutation in the witr prayer, he said: Glorify be to the king most holy.

Narrated Abu Saeed al-Khudri: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: If anyone oversleeps and misses the witr, or forgets it, he should pray when he remembers.
