Anas said (explaining the meaning) of the following Quranic verse They used to sleep but little of the night (51: 17): They (the people) used to pray between the Maghrib and 'Isha. The version of Yahya adds: The verse tatajafa junubuhum also means so.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَنَسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ:‏‏‏‏ كَانُوا قَلِيلا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ سورة الذاريات آية 17، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانُوا يُصَلُّونَ فِيمَا بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏زَادَ فِي حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى:‏‏‏‏ وَكَذَلِكَ تَتَجَافَى جُنُوبُهُمْ سورة السجدة آية 16.

انس رضی اللہ عنہ سے اللہ تعالیٰ کے اس قول «كانوا قليلا من الليل ما يهجعون» وہ رات کو بہت تھوڑا سویا کرتے تھے ( سورۃ الذاریات: ۱۷ ) کے بارے میں روایت ہے کہ اس سے مراد یہ ہے کہ لوگ مغرب اور عشاء کے درمیان نماز پڑھتے تھے۔ یحییٰ کی روایت میں یہ اضافہ ہے کہ «تتجافى جنوبهم‏» سے بھی یہی مراد ہے۔

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying: When one of you gets up at night, he should begin the prayer with two short rak'ahs.

Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been transmitted by Hammad bin Salamah, Zuhair bin Muawiyah and a group of narrators from Hisham. They transmitted it as a statement of Abu Hurairah himself (mauquf). This tradition has also been transmitted by Ibn 'Awn from Muhammad (b. Sirin). This version has the wordings: These two rak'ahs were short.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Habashi al-Khath'ami: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was asked: which is the best action? He replied: To stand in prayer for a long time.

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: A man asked the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم about the prayer at night. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: Prayer during the night should consist of pairs of rak'ahs, but if one of you fears the morning is near he should pray one rak'ah which will make his prayer an odd number for him.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet's صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم recitation was loud enough for one who was in the inner chamber to hear it when he was in the house.
