Narrated Aishah: When the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم finished his prayer late in the night, he would see. If I was awake, he would talk to me. If I was sleeping, he would awaken me, and pray two rak'ahs, then he would lie down as long as the muadhdhin came to him and call him for the dawn prayer. Then he would pray two rak'ahs lightly and come out for prayer.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَالِمٍ أَبِي النَّضْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ نَظَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنْ كُنْتُ مُسْتَيْقِظَةً حَدَّثَنِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنْ كُنْتُ نَائِمَةً أَيْقَظَنِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَصَلَّى الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهُ الْمُؤَذِّنُ فَيُؤْذِنَهُ بِصَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ فَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ .

ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا کہتی ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم جب آخری رات میں اپنی نماز پوری کر چکتے تو اگر میں جاگ رہی ہوتی تو آپ مجھ سے گفتگو کرتے اور اگر سو رہی ہوتی تو مجھے جگا دیتے، اور دو رکعتیں پڑھتے پھر لیٹ جاتے، یہاں تک کہ آپ کے پاس مؤذن آتا اور آپ کو نماز فجر کی خبر دیتا تو آپ دو ہلکی سی رکعتیں پڑھتے، پھر نماز کے لیے نکل جاتے۔

Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: When the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم prayed the two rak'ahs of the dawn prayer, he would lie down if I was asleep; in case I was awake, he would talk to me.

Narrated Abu Bakrah: I came out with the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم to offer the dawn prayer. When he passed by a sleeping man he called him for prayer or moved him with his foot. The narrator Ziyad said: This tradition has been reported to us by AbulFadl.

Narrated Abdullah bin Sarjas: A man came while the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was leading the people in the dawn prayer. He prayed the two rak'ahs and then joined the congregational prayer led by the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. When he finished the prayer, the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: So-and-so, which was your real prayer, the one you prayed alone or the one offered with us ?

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلمas saying: When the iqamah is pronounced for prayer, no prayer is valid except the obligatory prayer.

Narrated Qays ibn Amr: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم saw a person praying after the congregational prayer at dawn was over. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: There are two rak'ahs of the dawn prayer (i. e. the prescribed rak'ahs). The man replied: I did not pray the two rak'ahs before the dawn prayer. Hence I offered them now. The Messenger of Allah kept silent.

This tradition has also been transmitted by Ata bin Abi Rabah on the authority of Saad bin Saeed through a different chain of narrators. Abu Dawud said: Abd Rabbihi and Yahya bin Saeed also narrated this tradition from the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم omitting the name of the Companion (mursal). Their grandfather Zaid prayed along with the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم.
