Ibn Sirin said: Ibn Abbas said to his Muadhdhin on a rainy day: “when you utter the words ‘ I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, ” do not say, ” Come to prayer” but say “Pray at your homes, ” By this (announcement) the people were surprised. He said: One who was better than me has done it. The Friday prayer is an obligatory duty. But I disliked to put you to hardship so that you might walk in mud and rain.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ صَاحِبُ الزِّيَادِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ابْنِ عَمِّ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ لِمُؤَذِّنِهِ فِي يَوْمٍ مَطِيرٍ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَا تَقُلْ:‏‏‏‏ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قُلْ:‏‏‏‏ صَلُّوا فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَكَأَنَّ النَّاسَ اسْتَنْكَرُوا ذَلِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَدْ فَعَلَ ذَا مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِنَّ الْجُمُعَةَ عَزْمَةٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أُخْرِجَكُمْ فَتَمْشُونَ فِي الطِّينِ وَالْمَطَرِ.

محمد بن سیرین کے چچا زاد بھائی عبداللہ بن حارث کہتے ہیں کہ ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے بارش کے دن اپنے مؤذن سے کہا: جب تم«أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله» کہنا تو اس کے بعد «حي على الصلاة» نہ کہنا بلکہ اس کی جگہ «صلوا في بيوتكم» لوگو! اپنے اپنے گھروں میں نماز پڑھ لو کہنا، لوگوں نے اسے برا جانا تو انہوں نے کہا: ایسا اس ذات نے کیا ہے جو مجھ سے بہتر تھی ( یعنی رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ) ، بیشک جمعہ واجب ہے، لیکن مجھے یہ بات گوارہ نہ ہوئی کہ میں تم کو کیچڑ اور پانی میں ( جمعہ کے لیے ) آنے کی زحمت دوں۔

Narrated Tariq ibn Shihab: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: The Friday prayer in congregation is a necessary duty for every Muslim, with four exceptions; a slave, a woman, a boy, and a sick person. Abu Dawud said: Tariq bin Shihab had seen the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم but not heard anything from him.

Narrated Kab ibn Malik: Abdur Rahman ibn Kab ibn Malik said: When Kab ibn Malik heard the call to prayer on Friday, he prayed for Asad ibn Zurarah. I asked him: What is the matter that when you hear the call to prayer, you pray for Asad ibn Zurarah? He replied: This is because he held the Friday prayer for the first time for us at Hazm an-Nabit of Harrah belonging to Banu Bayadah in Naqi', called Naqi' al-Khadumat. I asked him: How many were you at that time ? He said: Forty.

Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam: Ilyas ibn Abu Ramlah ash-Shami said: I witnessed Muawiyah ibn Abu Sufyan asking Zayd ibn Arqam: Did you offer along with the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم the Friday and Eid prayers synchronised on the same day? He said: Yes. He asked: How did he do? He replied: He offered the Eid prayer, then granted concession to offer the Friday prayer, and said: If anyone wants to offer it, he may offer.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Ata ibn Abu Rabah said: Ibn az-Zubayr led us in the Eid prayer on Friday early in the morning. When we went to offer the Friday, he did not come out to us. So we prayed ourselves alone. At that time Ibn Abbas was present in at-Taif. When he came to us, we mentioned this (incident) to him. He said: He followed the sunnah.

Ata said: The Friday and the ‘id prayers synchronized during the time of Ibn al-Zubair. He said: Two festivals (‘id and Friday) synchronized on the same day. He combined them and offered two rak’ahs in the morning and did not add anything to them until he offered the afternoon prayer.
