A'isha, the wife of the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) reported: Umm Habiba b. Jahsh who was the sister-in-law of the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) and the wife of 'Abd al-Rahman b. Auf, remained mustahada for seven years, and she, therefore, asked for the verdict of Shari'ah from the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) about it The Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said: This is not menstruation, but (blood from) a vein: so bathe yourself and offer prayer. 'A'isha said: She took a bath in the wash-tub placed in the apartment of her sister Zainab b. Jahsh, till the redness of the blood came over the water. Ibn Shihab said: I narrated it to Abu Bakr b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Harith b. Hisham about it who observed: May Allah have mercy on Hinda! would that she listened to this verdict. By Lord, she wept for not offering prayer.

وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْمُرَادِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، وَعَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتَ جَحْشٍ، - خَتَنَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَتَحْتَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ - اسْتُحِيضَتْ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ. فَاسْتَفْتَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي ذَلِكَ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّ هَذِهِ لَيْسَتْ بِالْحَيْضَةِ وَلَكِنَّ هَذَا عِرْقٌ فَاغْتَسِلِي وَصَلِّي» قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: «فَكَانَتْ تَغْتَسِلُ فِي مِرْكَنٍ فِي حُجْرَةِ أُخْتِهَا زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ حَتَّى تَعْلُوَ حُمْرَةُ الدَّمِ الْمَاءَ» قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: فَحَدَّثْتُ بِذَلِكَ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، فَقَالَ: «يَرْحَمُ اللهُ هِنْدًا لَوْ سَمِعَتْ بِهَذِهِ الْفُتْيَا وَاللهِ إِنْ كَانَتْ لَتَبْكِي لِأَنَّهَا كَانَتْ لَا تُصَلِّي».

( لیث کے بجائے ) عمرو بن حارث نے ابن شہاب سے ، انہوں نے عروہ بن زبیر اورعمرہ بنت عبدالرحمن سے ، انہوں نے رسول اللہ ﷺ کی زوجہ عائشہ ؓ سے روایت کی کہ ام حبیبہ بنت جحش رسول اللہ ﷺ کی خواہر نسبتی کو ، جو ( ام المومنین زینب بن جحش کی بہن اور ) عبدالرحمن بن عوف ‌رضی ‌اللہ ‌عنہ ‌ ‌ کی بیوی تھیں ، سات سال تک استحاضہ کا عارضہ لاحق رہا ۔ انہو ں نے ا س کے بارے میں رسول اللہ ﷺ سے فتویٰ دریافت کیا تو رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا : ’’یہ حیض ( کا خون ) نہیں بلکہ یہ ایک رگ ( کا خون ) ہے ، لہٰذا تم غسل کرو اور نماز پڑھو ۔ ‘ ‘ عائشہ ؓ نے کہا : وہ اپنی بہن زینب بن جحش ؓ کے حجرے میں ایک بڑے تشت ( ٹب ) میں غسل کرتیں تو پانی پر خون کی سرخی غالب آ جاتی ۔ ابن شہاب نے کہا : میں یہ حدیث ابو بکر بن عبدالرحمن بن حارث کوسنائی تو انہوں نے کہا : اللہ تعالیٰ ہند پر رحم فرمائے! کاش وہ بھی یہ فتویٰ سن لیتیں ۔ اللہ کی قسم ! وہ اس بات پر روتی رہتی تھیں کہ استحاضے کی وجہ سے وہ نماز نہیں پڑھ سکتی تھیں ۔

This hadith has been thus reported by another chain of transmitters: Umm Habiba b. Jahsh came to the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) and she had been a mustahada for seven years, and the rest of the hadith was narrated like that of 'Amr b. al-Harith up to the words: There came the redness of the blood over water. and nothing was narrated beyond it.

The hadith has been narrated by 'A'isha through another chain of transmitters (in these words): I The daughter of jahsh had been mustabida for seven years, and the rest of the hadith is the same (as mentioned above).

On the authority of 'A'isha: Umm Habiba asked the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) about the blood (which flows beyond the period of menstruation). 'A'isha said: I saw her wash-tub full of blood. The Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said: Remain away (from prayer) equal (to the length of time) that your menses prevented you. After this (after the period of usual courses) bathe yourself and offer prayer.

A'isha, the wife of the Apostle ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ), said: Umm Habiba b. Jahsh who was the spouse of Abd al- Rahman b. Auf made a complaint to the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) about blood (which flows beyond the menstrual period). He said to her: Remain away (from prayer) equal (to the length of time) that your menstruation holds you back. After this, bathe yourself. And she washed herself before every prayer.

Mu'adha reported: A woman asked 'A'isha: Should one amongst us complete prayers abandoned during the period of menses? 'A'isha said: Are you a Haruriya? When any one of us during the time of the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) was in her menses (and abandoned prayer) she was not required to complete them.

It is reported from Mu'adha that she asked 'A'isha: Should a menstruating woman complete the prayer (abandoned during the menstrual period)? 'A'isha said: Are you a Hurariya? The wives of the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) have had their monthly courses, (but) did he order them to make compensation (for the abandoned prayers)? Muhammad b. Ja'far said: (Compensation) denotes their completion.
