Urwa b. Zubair reported that 'Abdullah b. Zubair had narrated to him that a person from the Ansar disputed with Zubair in the presence of Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) in regard to the watering places of Harra from which they watered the date-palms. The Ansari said: Let the water flow, but he (Zubair) refused to do this and the dispute was brought to Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) and he said to Zubair: Zubair, water (your date-palms), then let the water flow to your neighbor. The Ansari was enraged and said: Allah's Messenger, (you have given this decision) for he is the son of your father's sister. The face of Allah's Apostle ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) underwent a change, and then said: Zubair, water (your date-palms), then hold it until it rises up to the walls. Zubair said: I think, by Allah, that this verse: Nay, by the Lord, they will not (really) (believe) until they make thee a judge of what is in dispute among them, and find in this no dislike of what thou decidest and submit with full submission (iv. 65).

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ خَاصَمَ الزُّبَيْرَ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فِي شِرَاجِ الْحَرَّةِ الَّتِي يَسْقُونَ بِهَا النَّخْلَ، فَقَالَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ: سَرِّحِ الْمَاءَ يَمُرُّ، فَأَبَى عَلَيْهِمْ، فَاخْتَصَمُوا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلزُّبَيْرِ: اسْقِ يَا زُبَيْرُ ثُمَّ أَرْسِلِ الْمَاءَ إِلَى جَارِكَ، فَغَضِبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنْ كَانَ ابْنَ عَمَّتِكَ فَتَلَوَّنَ وَجْهُ نَبِيِّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «يَا زُبَيْرُ اسْقِ، ثُمَّ احْبِسِ الْمَاءَ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ إِلَى الْجَدْرِ» فَقَالَ الزُّبَيْرُ: وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَحْسِبُ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ نَزَلَتْ فِي ذَلِكَ {فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ حَتَّى يُحَكِّمُوكَ فِيمَا شَجَرَ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ حَرَجًا} [النساء: 65]

عروہ بن زبیر سے روایت ہے کہ حضرت عبداللہ بن زبیر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے انھیں حدیث سنائی کہ انصار میں سے ایک آدمی نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے سامنے حرہ میں واقع پانی کی ان گزرگاہوں ( برساتی نالیوں ) کے بارے میں حضرت زبیر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے جھگڑا کیا جن سے وہ کھجوروں کو سیراب کرتے تھے ۔ انصاری کہتا تھا : پانی کو کھلا چھوڑ دو وہ آگے کی طرف گزر جائے ، انھوں نے ان لوگوں کی بات ماننے سے انکار کردیا ۔ وہ لوگ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس جھگڑا لے آئے ۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم زبیر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ ( کونرمی کی تلقین کرتے ہوئے ان ) سے کہا : " تم ( جلدی سے اپنے باغ کو ) پلاکر پانی اپنے ہمسائے کی طرف روانہ کردو ۔ " انصاری غضبناک ہوگیا اورکہنے لگا : اللہ کے رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم !اس لئے کہ وہ آپ کا پھوپھی زاد ہے ۔ ( صدمے سے ) نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے چہرے کارنگ بدل گیا ، پھر آپ نے فرمایا : " زبیر! ( باغ کو ) پانی دو ، پھر اتنی دیر پانی کو روکو کہ وہ کھجوروں کے گرد کھودے گڑھے کی منڈیر سے ٹکرانے لگے " زبیر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نےکہا : اللہ کی قسم! میں یقیناً یہ سمجھتا ہوں کہ یہ آیت : " نہیں!آپ کےرب کی قسم !وہ اس وقت تک مومن نہیں ہوسکتے " اسی ( واقعے ) کے بارے میں نازل ہوئی ہے ۔

Abu Huraira reported that he heard Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: Avoid that which I forbid you to do and do that which I command you to do to the best of your capacity. Verily the people before you went to their doom because they had put too many questions to their Prophets and then disagreed with their teachings.

This hadith has been narrated by Abu Huraira through a different chain of transmitters (and the words are) that he reported Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) having said: Abandon that which I have asked you to abandon, for the people before you went to their doom (for asking too many questions).

Amir b. Sa'd reported on the authority of his father that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said: The greatest sinner amongst the Muslims is one who asked about a thing (from Allah's Apostle) which had not been forbidden for the Muslims and it was forbidden for them because of his persistently asking about it.

This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of 'Amir b. Sa'd and the words are. Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said: The greatest sinner of the Muslims amongst Muslims is one who asked about a certain thing which had not been prohibited and it was prohibited because of his asking about it.

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters and with this addition: A person asked about a thing from Allah's Apostle ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) and he indulged in hair-splitting.
