Translation

Abdullah b. Ka'b reported that his father Ka'b narrated to him that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) used to eat with three fingers and when he had finished (eating), he licked them.

و حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَوْ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ كَعْبٍ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ كَعْبٍ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِثَلَاثِ أَصَابِعَ فَإِذَا فَرَغَ لَعِقَهَا

عبداللہ بن نمیر نے کہا : ہمیں ہشام نے عبدالرحمان بن سعد سے حدیث بیا ن کی کہ عبدالرحمان بن کعب ۔ یا عبداللہ بن کعب ۔ نے اپنے والد کعب ( بن مالک ) رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت کی کہ انھوں نے ان کو حدیث سنائی کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم تین انگلیوں سےکھاتے تھے اور جب کھانے سے فارغ ہوتے توان کو چاٹ لیتے تھے ۔

Jabir reported that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) commanded the licking of fingers and the dish, saying: You do not know in what portion the blessing lies.

Jabir reported Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: When any one of you drops a mouthful he should pick it up and remove any of the filth on it, and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan, and should not wipe his hand with towel until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of the food the blessing lies.

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Sufyan with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording.

Jabir reported: I heard Allah's Apostle ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: The Satan is present with any one of you in everything he does; he is present even when he eats food; so if any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave for the devil; and when he finishes (food) he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing lies.

This hadith is reported on the authority of A'mash with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words but no mention is made of the first part of the hadith, i. e. the Satan is present with any one of you.
