Translation

Zadhan reported: I said to Ibn 'Umar: Tell me in your own language and then explain it to me in any language because your language is different from our language (about the vessels) in which Allah's Apostle ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) has forbidden (us) to drink. He said: Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) has forbidden (the preparation) of Nabidh in Hantama and that is a pitcher (besmeared with pitch), in gourd and that is pumpkin, in the varnished jar, in hollow stump and in wooden vessels. This Naqir is the wood of date-palm from which the vessel is fashioned out or hollowed out, but he commanded us to prepare Nabidh in waterskins.

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، حَدَّثَنِي زَاذَانُ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عُمَرَ: حَدِّثْنِي بِمَا نَهَى عَنْهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْأَشْرِبَةِ بِلُغَتِكَ، وَفَسِّرْهُ لِي بِلُغَتِنَا، فَإِنَّ لَكُمْ لُغَةً سِوَى لُغَتِنَا، فَقَالَ: «نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْحَنْتَمِ، وَهِيَ الْجَرَّةُ، وَعَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ، وَهِيَ الْقَرْعَةُ، وَعَنِ الْمُزَفَّتِ، وَهُوَ الْمُقَيَّرُ، وَعَنِ النَّقِيرِ، وَهِيَ النَّخْلَةُ تُنْسَحُ نَسْحًا، وَتُنْقَرُ نَقْرًا، وَأَمَرَ أَنْ يُنْتَبَذَ فِي الْأَسْقِيَةِ»،

عبید اللہ کے والد معاذ نے کہا : ہمیں شعبہ نے عمرو بن مرہ سے حدیث کی ، کہا : مجھے زاذان نے حدیث بیان کی کہا : میں نے حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے عرض کی کہ پینے کی چیزوں کے حوالے سے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے جن چیزوں سے منع کیا ہے ان کے متعلق مجھے ( پہلے ) اپنی زبان میں حدیث سنائیں پھر ہماری زبان میں اس کی وضا حت کریں کیونکہ آپ کی زبان ہماری زبان سے مختلف ہے ۔ انھوں نے کہا : رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے حنتم سے اور وہ گھڑا ہے اور دباء سے اور کدو ہے اور مزفت سے اور وہ روغن قار ملا ہوا برتن ہے اور نقیر سے اور وہ کھجور کا تنا ہے اسے چھیلا جا تا ہے اور اس کو کریدا جا تا ہے منع فرما یا ہے اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے حکم دیا کہ مشکیزوں میں نبیذ بنا ئی جا ئے ۔

Sa'id b. Musayyib reported: I heard 'Abdullah b 'Umar saying this near the pulpit while pointing towards the pulpit of Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ): A group of the tribe of 'Abd al-Qais came to Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) and asked him about (vessels) which might (be used for preparing Nabidh and) drinking in them. He (the Holy Prophet) forbade them (to use) gourd, hollow stump, vessel besmeared with pitch. I said to him: Abu Muhammad, (what about) varnished jar? and we think he had forgotten to mention the word 'varnished jar . Thereupon he said: I did not hear it from him on that day, i. e. from 'Abdullah b. 'Umar, and he hated that (i. e. preparation of Nabidh in gourd).

It is reported on the authority of Jabir and Ibn Umar that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) forbade (the preparation) of Nabidh in hollow stump and varnished jar and gourd.

Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) forbade (the preparation) of Nabidh in green pitcher, in varnished jar, in hollow stump, and when Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) did not find anything to prepare Nabidh in that (i. e. waterskin), it was prepared for him in a big bowl made of stone.
