Abu Tufail reported: I said to Ibn `Abbas (Allah be pleased with them): Do you think that walking swiftly round the House in three circuits, and just walking in four circuits is the Sunnah (of the Holy Prophet), for your people say that it is Sunnah? Thereupon he (Ibn `Abbas) said: They have told the truth and the lie (too). I said: What do your words They have told the truth and the lie (too) imply? Thereupon he said: Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) came to Mecca and the polytheists said that Muhammad and his Companions had emaciated and would, therefore, be unable to circumambulate the House; and they felt jealous of him (the Holy Prophet). (It was due to this) that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) commanded them to walk swiftly in three (circuits) and walk (normally) in four. I said to him: Inform me if it is Sunnah to observe Tawaf between al-Safa and al-Marwa while riding, for your people look upon it as Sunnah. He (Ibn `Abbas) said: They have told the truth and the lie too. I said: What do your words They have told the truth and the lie too imply? He said: When Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) had come to Mecca, there was such a large gathering of people around him that even the virgins had come out of their houses (to catch a glimpse of his face). And they were saying: He is Muhammad; He is Muhammad. Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) (was so gentle and kind) that the people were not beaten back (to make way) in front of him. When there was a throng (of people) around him, he rode (the she-camel). However, walking and trotting are better.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ فُضَيْلُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: أَرَأَيْتَ هَذَا الرَّمَلَ بِالْبَيْتِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَطْوَافٍ، وَمَشْيَ أَرْبَعَةِ أَطْوَافٍ، أَسُنَّةٌ هُوَ؟ فَإِنَّ قَوْمَكَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ، قَالَ فَقَالَ: صَدَقُوا، وَكَذَبُوا، قَالَ قُلْتُ: مَا قَوْلُكَ: صَدَقُوا وَكَذَبُوا؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ، فَقَالَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ: إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا وَأَصْحَابَهُ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ أَنْ يَطُوفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ مِنَ الْهُزَالِ، وَكَانُوا يَحْسُدُونَهُ، قَالَ: فَأَمَرَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَرْمُلُوا ثَلَاثًا، وَيَمْشُوا أَرْبَعًا، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الطَّوَافِ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ رَاكِبًا، أَسُنَّةٌ هُوَ؟ فَإِنَّ قَوْمَكَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ، قَالَ: صَدَقُوا وَكَذَبُوا، قَالَ قُلْتُ: وَمَا قَوْلُكَ: صَدَقُوا وَكَذَبُوا؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَثُرَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ، يَقُولُونَ: هَذَا مُحَمَّدٌ هَذَا مُحَمَّدٌ، حَتَّى خَرَجَ الْعَوَاتِقُ مِنَ الْبُيُوتِ قَالَ: وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يُضْرَبُ النَّاسُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا كَثُرَ عَلَيْهِ رَكِبَ وَالْمَشْيُ وَالسَّعْيُ أَفْضَلُ

عبدالواحد بن زیاد نےہمیں حدیث سنائی ، ( کہا : ) ہمیں جریری نے ابو طفیل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت کی ، کہا : میں نے حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے عرض کی : آپ کی کیا رائے ہے بیت اللہ کاطواف کرتے ہوئے تین چکروں میں رمل اور چار چکروں میں چلنا ، کیا یہ سنت ہے؟کیونکہ آپ کی قوم یہ سمجھتی ہے کہ یہ سنت ہے ۔ کہا : ( انھوں نے ) فرمایا : انھوں نے صحیح بھی کہا اورغلط بھی ۔ میں نے کہا : آپ کے اس جملے کا کہ انھوں نے درست بھی کہا اورغلط بھی ، کیامطلب ہے؟انھوں نے فرمایا : اللہ کے رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم مکہ تشریف لائے تو مشرکوں نے کہا : محمد اوران کے ساتھی ( مدینے کی ناموافق آب وہوا ، بخار اور ) کمزوری کے باعث بیت اللہ کا طواف نہیں کرسکتے ۔ کفار آپ سے حسد کرتے تھے ۔ ( ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے ) کہا : ( ان کی با ت سن کر ) آپ نے انھیں ( صحابہ رضوان اللہ عنھم اجمعین کو ) حکم دیا کہ تین چکروں میں رمل کرو اورچار چکروں میں ( عام رفتار سے ) چلو ۔ ( ابوطفیل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے ) کہا : میں نے ان ( ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ ) سے عرض کی : مجھے سوار ہوکرصفا مروہ کی سعی کرنے کے متعلق بھی بتائیے ، کیاوہ سنت ہے؟کیونکہ آپ کی قوم کے لوگ سمجھتے ہیں کہ وہ سنت ہے ۔ انھوں نے فرمایا : انھوں نے صحیح بھی کہا اور غلط بھی ، میں نے کہا : اس بات کا کیا مطلب ہے کہ انھوں نےصحیح بھی کہا اورغلط بھی؟انھوں نےفرمایا : اللہ کےرسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پرلوگوں کا جمگھٹا ہوگیا ، وہ سب ( آپ کو دیکھنے کے خواہش مندتھے اور ایک دوسرے سے ) کہہ رہے تھے ۔ یہ ہیں محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ۔ یہ ہیں محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم حتیٰ کہ نوجوان عورتیں بھی گھروں سے نکلی ۔ ( ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے ) کہا : اللہ کے رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے سامنے سے ( ہٹانے کےلئے ) لوگوں کو مارانہیں جاتا تھا ، جب آپ ( کے راستے ) پر لوگوں کا ٹھٹھہ لگ گیا تو آپ سوار ہوگئے ۔ ( کچھ حصے میں ) چلنا اور ( کچھ میں ) سعی کرنا ( تیز چلنا ہی ) افضل ہے ۔ ( کیونکہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اصل میں یہی کرنا چاہتے تھے ۔ )

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of jurairi with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words (and this is) that he (the narrator) did not say: They felt jealous of him. but said: The people of Mecca, were jealous people.

Abu Tufail reported: I said to Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with them): People are of the view that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) moved quickly round the House and between al-Safa and al-Marwa, and (thus) it is Sunnah. He said: They told the truth and they told the lie.

Abu Tufail reported; I. said to Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with them): I think that I saw Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ). He (Ibn 'Abbis) said' Give a description of him to me. I said: I saw him near al-Marwa on the back of a she- camel, and people had thronged around him. Thereupon Ibn'Abbis said: It was Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) for they (the Compainions of the Holy Prophet) were neither pushed aside from him, nor were they turned away.

Ibn 'Abbas (At lab be pleased with them) reported: Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) and his Companions came to Mecca and the fever in Medina had weakened them. Thereupon the polytheists (of Mecca) said: There would come to you a people whom the fever has made weak and they have suffered severely from it. They sat in Hatim. Thereupon Allah's Apostle ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) commanded them to walk quickly ift three circuits and walk (in four) between the two corners. so that the polytheists should. see their endurance. The polytheists then said (to one anothery You were under the impression that fever had emaciated them. whereas they are stronger than so and so. Ibn Abbas said: He (the Holy Prophet) did not command them (the Muslims) to walk quickly in all the circuits out of kindness to them.

Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) reported: Allah. 's Messenger (peace be upon him) observed Sa'i and walked quickly round the House with a view to showing his strength to the polytheists.

Ahdullah b. Umar (reported) that he had not seen Allah's Messenger (way peace he upon him) touching anything in the House, except the two Yamani corners.
