Sahih Muslim

Salama b. Akwa' reported: We, during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ), in one month of Ramadan (observed fast according to our liking). He who wished to fast lasted and he who wished to break broke it and fed a needy person as an expiation 1544 till this verse was revealed: He who witnesses among you the month (of Ramadan) he should observe fast during it (ii. 184).
حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ سَوَّادٍ الْعَامِرِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ الْأَشَجِّ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ، مَوْلَى سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «كُنَّا فِي رَمَضَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ فَافْتَدَى بِطَعَامِ مِسْكِينٍ»، حَتَّى أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: {فَمَنْ شَهِدَ مِنْكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ} [البقرة: 185]
  عمرو بن سواد عامری ، عبداللہ بن وہب ، عمروبن حارث بکیر بن اشجع ، یزید مولی سلمۃ بن اکوع ، حضرت سلمہ بن اکوع رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے فرماتے ہیں کہ رمضان کےمہینہ میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے زمانہ مبارک میں ہم سے جو چاہتا روزہ رکھ لیتا اور جو چاہتا روزہ چھوڑ دیتا اور ایک مسکین کو کھانا کھلا کر ایک روزے کو فدیہ دے دیتا یہاں تک کہ یہ آیت کریمہ نازل ہوئی ( فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ الشَّهْرَ‌فَلْيَصُمْهُ ) تو جو تم میں سے اس مہینہ میں موجود ہوتو اسے چاہیے کہ وہ روزہ رکھے ۔

Abu Salama reported: I heard 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) as saying: I had to complete some of the fasts of Ramadan, but I could not do it but during the month of Sha'ban due to my duties to the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) or with the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ).

This hadith is narrated on the authority of Yahya b. Sa'id with the same chain of transmitters but with this variation that he said that ('A'isha did not observe fast but in Sha'ban) out of regard for the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ).

A'isha reported: If one amongst us had to break fasts (of Ramadan due to natural reasons, i. e. menses) during the life of the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) she could not find it possible to complete them so long she had been in the presence of Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) till Sha'ban commenced.

A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: If anyone dies in a state (that he had to complete) some fasts, his heir must fast on his behalf.
