Abdullah b. Abu Mulaika reported: I was sitting by the side of Ibn 'Umar, and we were waiting for the bier of Umm Aban, daughter of 'Uthman, and there was also 'Amr b. 'Uthman. In the meanwhile there came Ibn 'Abbas led by a guide. I conceive that he was informed of the place of Ibn 'Umar. So he came till he sat by my side. While I was between them (Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn 'Umar) there came the noise (of wailing) from the house. Upon this Ibn 'Umar said (that is, he pointed out to 'Amr that he should stand and forbid them, for): I heard the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as saying: The dead is punished because of the lamentation of his family. 'Abdullah made it general (what was said for a particular occasion). Ibn 'Abbas said: When we were with the Commander of the believers, 'Umar b. Khattab, we reached Baida', and there was a man under the shadow of the tree. He said to me: Go and inform me who is that person. So I went and (found) that he was Suhaib. I returned to him and said: You commanded me to find out for you who that was, and he is Suhaib. He (Hadrat 'Umar) said: Command him to see us. I said: He has family along with him. He said: (That is of no account) even if he has family along with him. So he (the narrator) told him to see (the Commander of the believers and his party). When we came (to Medina), it was before long that the Commander of the believers was wounded, and Suhaib came weeping and crying: Alas for the brother, alas for the companion. Upon this 'Umar said: Didn't you know, or didn't you hear, that the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said: The dead is punished because of the lamentation of his family ? Then 'Abdullah made it general and 'Umar told it of certain occasions. So I ('Abdullah b. Abu Mulaika) stood up and went to 'A'isha and told her what Ibn 'Umar had said. Upon this she said: I swear by Allah that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) never said that dead would be punished because of his family's lamenting (for him). What he said was that Allah would increase the punishment of the unbeliever because of his family's lamenting for him. Verily it is Allah Who has caused laughter and weeping. No bearer of a burden will bear another's burden. Ibn Abu Mulaika said that al-Qasim b. Muhammad said that when the words of 'Umar and Ibn 'Umar were conveyed to 'A'isha, she said: You have narrated it to me from those who are neither liar nor those suspected of lying but (sometimes) hearing misleads.

حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ جَالِسًا إِلَى جَنْبِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَنَحْنُ نَنْتَظِرُ جَنَازَةَ أُمِّ أَبَانَ بِنْتِ عُثْمَانَ وَعِنْدَهُ عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ فَجَاءَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُودُهُ قَائِدٌ فَأُرَاهُ أَخْبَرَهُ بِمَكَانِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَجَاءَ حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِي فَكُنْتُ بَيْنَهُمَا فَإِذَا صَوْتٌ مِنْ الدَّارِ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ كَأَنَّهُ يَعْرِضُ عَلَى عَمْرٍو أَنْ يَقُومَ فَيَنْهَاهُمْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ الْمَيِّتَ لَيُعَذَّبُ بِبُكَاءِ أَهْلِهِ قَالَ فَأَرْسَلَهَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ مُرْسَلَةً فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ كُنَّا مَعَ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِالْبَيْدَاءِ إِذَا هُوَ بِرَجُلٍ نَازِلٍ فِي ظِلِّ شَجَرَةٍ فَقَالَ لِي اذْهَبْ فَاعْلَمْ لِي مَنْ ذَاكَ الرَّجُلُ فَذَهَبْتُ فَإِذَا هُوَ صُهَيْبٌ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّكَ أَمَرْتَنِي أَنْ أَعْلَمَ لَكَ مَنْ ذَاكَ وَإِنَّهُ صُهَيْبٌ قَالَ مُرْهُ فَلْيَلْحَقْ بِنَا فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ مَعَهُ أَهْلَهُ قَالَ وَإِنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ أَهْلُهُ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ أَيُّوبُ مُرْهُ فَلْيَلْحَقْ بِنَا فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا لَمْ يَلْبَثْ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْ أُصِيبَ فَجَاءَ صُهَيْبٌ يَقُولُ وَا أَخَاهْ وَا صَاحِبَاهْ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَوَ لَمْ تَسْمَعْ قَالَ أَيُّوبُ أَوْ قَالَ أَوَ لَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَوَ لَمْ تَسْمَعْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ الْمَيِّتَ لَيُعَذَّبُ بِبَعْضِ بُكَاءِ أَهْلِهِ قَالَ فَأَمَّا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَأَرْسَلَهَا مُرْسَلَةً وَأَمَّا عُمَرُ فَقَالَ بِبَعْضِ فَقُمْتُ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَحَدَّثْتُهَا بِمَا قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ فَقَالَتْ لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا قَالَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَطُّ إِنَّ الْمَيِّتَ يُعَذَّبُ بِبُكَاءِ أَحَدٍ وَلَكِنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ الْكَافِرَ يَزِيدُهُ اللَّهُ بِبُكَاءِ أَهْلِهِ عَذَابًا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَهُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَى وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى قَالَ أَيُّوبُ قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ حَدَّثَنِي الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ لَمَّا بَلَغَ عَائِشَةَ قَوْلُ عُمَرَ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَتْ إِنَّكُمْ لَتُحَدِّثُونِّي عَنْ غَيْرِ كَاذِبَيْنِ وَلَا مُكَذَّبَيْنِ وَلَكِنَّ السَّمْعَ يُخْطِئُ

ایوب نے عبد اللہ بن ابی ملیکہ سے روا یت کی ، انھوں نے کہا : میں حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے پہلو میں بیٹھا ہوا تھا ۔ ہم حضرت عثمان رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی صاحبزادی ام ابان کے جنازے کا انتظار کر رہے تھے جبکہ عمرو بن عثمان بھی ان کے پا س تھے اتنے میں حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ آئے انھیں لے کر آنے والا ایک آدمی لا یا میرے خیال میں اس نے حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کو حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی بیٹھنے کی جگہ کے بارے میں بتا یا تو وہ آکر میرے پہلو میں بیٹھ گئے میں ان دو نوں کے در میان میں تھا اچانک گھر ( کے اندر ) سے ( رونے کی ) آواز آئی تو ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے ۔ ۔ ۔ اور ایسا لگتا تھا وہ عمرو ( بن عثمان ) کو اشارہ کر رہے ہیں کہ وہ انھیں اور ان کو روکیں ۔ ۔ ۔ کہا میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو یہ فر ما تے ہو ئے سنا ہے بلا شبہ میت کو اس کے گھر والوں کے رو نے سے عذاب دیا جا تا ہے : " ( عبد اللہ بن ابی ملیکہ نے ) کہا : حضرت عبد اللہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے اس کو بلا شرط و قید ( یعنی ہر طرح کے رو نے کے حوالے سے ) بیان کیا ۔ اس پر حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے کہا : ہم امیر المو منین حضرت عمربن خطا ب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے ساتھ تھے حتیٰ کہ جب ہم بیداء کے مقام پر پہنچے تو انھوں نے ایک آدمی کو درخت کے سائے میں پڑا ؤڈالے دیکھا انھوں نے مجھ سے کہا : جا ؤ اور میرے لیے پتہ کرو کہ وہ کو ن آدمی ہے میں گیا تو دیکھا وہ صہیب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ تھے میں ان کے پاس واپس آیا اور کہا : آپ نے مجھے حکم دیا تھا کہ میں آپ کے لیے پتہ کروں کہ وہ کو ن شخص ہیں تو وہ صہیب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ ہیں انھوں نے کہا : ( جاؤ اور ) ان کو حکم ( پہنچا ) دو کہ وہ ہمارے ساتھ ( قافلے میں ) آجا ئیں ۔ میں نے کہا : ان کے ساتھ ان کے گھر والے ہیں انھوں نے کہا : چاہے ان کے ساتھ ان کے گھر والے ( بھی ) ہیں شامل ہو جا ئیں ) بسا اوقات ایوب نے ( بس یہاں تک کہا ) ان سے کہو کہ وہ ہمارے ساتھ ( قافلے میں ) شامل ہو جائیں ۔ ۔ ۔ جب ہم مدینہ پہنچے تو زیادہ وقت نہ گزرا تھا کہ امیر المو منین زخمی کردیے گئے صہیب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ یہ کہتے ہو ئے آئے ہائے میرا بھائی !ہائے میرا ساتھی!تو عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے کہا کیا تمھیں معلوم نہیں یا ( کہا : تم نے سنا نہیں ۔ ۔ ۔ ایوب نے کہا : یا انھوں نے ( اس کے بجا ئے ( او لم تعلم ...اولم تسمع کیا تمھیں پتہ نہیں اور تم نے سنا نہیں " کے الفاظ کہے ۔ ۔ ۔ کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فر ما یا : " میت کو اس کے گھر والوں کے بعض ( طرح کے ) رونے سے عذاب دیا جاتا ہے ( ابن ابی ملیکہ نے ) کہا : حضرت عبداللہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے اس ( رونے کے لفظ ) کو بلا قید بیان کیا جبکہ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے ( لفظ ) بعض ( کی قید ) کے ساتھ کہاتھا ۔ میں ( ابن ابی ملکہ ) اٹھ کر حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا اور حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے جو کہا تھا ان کو بتا یا انھوں نے کہا نہیں اللہ کی قسم !رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے یہ کبھی نہیں فر ما یا کہ میت کو کسی ایک کے رونے کی وجہ سے عذاب دیا جا تا ہے بلکہ آپ نے فر ما یا ہے : " اللہ تعا لیٰ کا فر کے عذاب میں اس کے گھر والوں کے رو نے کی وجہ سے اضافہ کر دیتا ہے ( کیونکہ کا فروں نے اپنی اولاد کو بلند آواز سے رونا سکھایا ہوتا ہے رہا بغیر آواز کے رونا تو اس کی ذمہ داری رونے والے پر نہیں کیونکہ ) بے شک اللہ ہی ہے جس نے ہنسایا اور رلایا ۔ " اور بو جھ اٹھا نے والی کو ئی جان کسی دوسری کا بو جھ نہیں اٹھا ئے گی ۔ ( آواز کے بغیر محض آنسوؤں سے رونے کا نہ رونے والے کو گنا ہ ہے نہ اس کے بڑوں کو کیونکہ وہ بھی اس کے ذمہ دار نہیں ۔ ) ایوب نے کہا : ابن ابی ملیکہ نے کہاں مجھ سے قاسم بن محمد نے بیان کیا انھوں نے کہا : جب حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کو حضرت عمر اور ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی یہ بات پہنچی تو انھوں نے کہا : تم مجھے ایسے دو افراد کی حدیث بیان کرتے ہو جو نہ ( خود جھوٹ بولنے والے ہیں اور نہ جھٹلائے جا نے والے ہیں لیکن ( بعض اوقات ) سماع ( سننا ) غلط ہو جا تا ہے ( کیونکہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ایک اور سیاق میں یہ با ت کی تھی دیکھیے حدیث نمبر2153 ۔ 2156 ) ۔ ۔

Abdullah b. Abu Mulaika said: The daughter of 'Uthman b. 'Affan died in Mecca. We came to attend her (funeral). Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas were also present there, and I was sitting between them. He added: I (first sat) by the side of one of them, then the other one came and he sat by my side. 'Abdullah b. 'Umar said to 'Amr b. 'Uthman who was sitting opposite to him: Will you not prevent the people from lamenting, for the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) had said: The dead is punished because of the lamenting of his family for him ? Ibn 'Abbas then said that Umar used to say someting of that nature, and then narrated saying: I proceeded from Mecca along with 'Umar till we reached al-Baida' and there was a party of riders under the shade of a tree. He said (to me): Go and find out who this party is. I cast a glance and there was Suhaib (in that party). So I informed him ('Umar) about it. He said: Call him to me. So I went back to Suhaib and said: Go and meet the Commander of the believers. When 'Umar was wounded, Suhaib came walling: Alas, for the brother! alas for the companion! 'Umar said: O Suhaib, do you wail for me, whereas the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said: The dead would be punished on account of the lamentation of the (members of his family) ? Ibn 'Abbas said: When 'Umar died I made a mention of it to 'A'isha. She said: May Allah have mercy upon 'Umar! I swear by Allah that Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) never said that Allah would punish the believer because of the weeping (of any one of the members of his family), but he said that Allah would increase the punishment of the unbeliever because of the weeping of his family over him. 'A'isha said: The Qur'an is enough for you (when it states): No bearer of burden will bear another's burden (vi. 164). Thereupon Ibn 'Abbas said: Allah is He Who has caused laughter and weeping. Ibn Abu Mulaika said: By Allah, Ibn 'Umar said nothing.

Amr reported on the authority of Ibn Abu Mulaika: We were with the bier of Umm Aban, daughter of 'Uthman, and the rest of the hadith is the same, but he did not narrate it as a marfu' hadith on the authority of 'Umar from the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) as it was narrated by Ayyub and Ibn Juraij, and the hadith narrated by them (Ayyub and Ibn Juraij) is more complete than that of 'Amr.

Abdullah b. 'Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said: The dead is punished because of the lamentation of the living.

Hisham b. 'Urwa narrated on the authority of his father that the saying of Ibn 'Umar, viz. The dead would be punished because of the lamentation of his family over him was mentioned to 'A'isha. Upon this she said: May Allah have mercy upon Abu 'Abd al-Rahman (the kunya of Ibn 'Umar) that he heard something but could not retain it (well). (The fact is) that the bier of a Jew passed before the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) and (the members of his family) were waiting over him. Upon this he said: You are wailing and he is being punished.

Hisham narrated on the authority of his father that it was mentioned to 'A'isha that Ibn 'Umar had narrated as marfu' hadith from the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) that the dead would be punished in the grave because of the lamentation of his family for him. Upon this she said: He (Ibn 'Umar) missed (the point). The Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) had (in fact) said: He (the dead) is punished for his faults or for his sins, and the members of his family are wailing for him now. (This misunderstanding of Ibn 'Umar is similar to his saying: ) The Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) stood by the well in which were lying the dead bodies of those polytheists who had been killed on the Day of Badr, and he said to them what he had to say, i. e.: They hear what I say. But he (Ibn 'Umar) misunderstood. The Prophet ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) had only said: They (the dead) understand that what I used to say to them was truth. She then recited: Certainly, thou canst not make the dead hear the call (xxvii. 80), nor can you make those hear who are in the graves, nor can you inform them when they have taken their seats in Hell.
