Abdullah (b. 'Umar) reported: The Apostle of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) recited (Surat) al Najm and performed prostration during its recital and all those who were along with him also prostrated themselves except one old man who took a handful of pebbles or dust in his palm and lifted it to his forehead and said: This is sufficient for me. 'Abdullah said: I saw that he was later killed in a state of unbelief.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْأَسْوَدَ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، «عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَرَأَ وَالنَّجْمِ فَسَجَدَ فِيهَا، وَسَجَدَ مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ» غَيْرَ أَنَّ شَيْخًا أَخَذَ كَفًّا مِنْ حَصًى أَوْ تُرَابٍ فَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى جَبْهَتِهِ، وَقَالَ: يَكْفِينِي هَذَا قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: «لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ بَعْدُ قُتِلَ كَافِرًا»

حضرت عبداللہ ( بن مسعود ‌رضی ‌اللہ ‌عنہ ‌ ‌ ) نے نبی اکرم ﷺ سے روایت کی کہ آپ آپ ﷺ نے سورۃ نجم کی تلاوت کی اور اس میں سجدہ کیا اور آپ کے ساتھ جتنے لوگ تھے سب نے سجدہ کیا ، مگر ایک بوڑھے ( امیہ بن خلف ) نے کنکریوں یا مٹی کی ایک مٹھی بھر کر اپنی پیشانی سے لگا لی اور کہا : میرے لیے یہی کافی ہے ۔ عبداللہ ( بن مسعود ‌رضی ‌اللہ ‌عنہ ‌ ‌ ) نے کہا : میں نےبعد میں دیکھا ، اسے کفر کی حالمت میں قتل کیا گیا ۔

ta' b. Yasar reported that he had asked Zaid b. Thabit about recital along with the Imam, to which he said: There should be no recital along with the Imam in anything, and alleged that he recited: By the star when it sets (Surah Najm) before the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) and he did not prostrate himself.

Abu Salama b. 'Abual-Rahman reported: Abu Huraira recited before them: hen the heaven burst asunder (al-Qur'an, lxxxiv. 1) and performed prostration. After completing (the prayer) he informed them that the Messenger of Allah ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) has prostrated himself at it (this verse).
