Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet set out with the intention of going to Suq `Ukaz (market of `Ukaz) along with some of his companions. At the same time, a barrier was put between the devils and the news of heaven. Fire commenced to be thrown at them. The Devils went to their people, who asked them, What is wrong with you? They said, A barrier has been placed between us and the news of heaven. And fire has been thrown at us. They said, The thing which has put a barrier between you and the news of heaven must be something which has happened recently. Go eastward and westward and see what has put a barrier between you and the news of heaven. Those who went towards Tuhama came across the Prophet at a place called Nakhla and it was on the way to Suq `Ukaz and the Prophet was offering the Fajr prayer with his companions. When they heard the Qur'an they listened to it and said, By Allah, this is the thing which has put a barrier between us and the news of heaven. They went to their people and said, O our people; verily we have heard a wonderful recital (Qur'an) which shows the true path; we believed in it and would not ascribe partners to our Lord. Allah revealed the following verses to his Prophet (Sura 'Jinn') (72): Say: It has been revealed to me. And what was revealed to him was the conversation of the Jinns.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : انْطَلَقَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي طَائِفَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ عَامِدِينَ إِلَى سُوقِ عُكَاظٍ ، وَقَدْ حِيلَ بَيْنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ ، وَأُرْسِلَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّهُبُ فَرَجَعَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ ، فَقَالُوا : مَا لَكُمْ ، فَقَالُوا : حِيلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ ، وَأُرْسِلَتْ عَلَيْنَا الشُّهُبُ ، قَالُوا : مَا حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ إِلَّا شَيْءٌ حَدَثَ فَاضْرِبُوا مَشَارِقَ الْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبَهَا ، فَانْظُرُوا مَا هَذَا الَّذِي حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ ، فَانْصَرَفَ أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ تَوَجَّهُوا نَحْوَ تِهَامَةَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ بِنَخْلَةَ عَامِدِينَ إِلَى سُوقِ عُكَاظٍ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي بِأَصْحَابِهِ صَلَاةَ الْفَجْرِ ، فَلَمَّا سَمِعُوا الْقُرْآنَ اسْتَمَعُوا لَهُ ، فَقَالُوا : هَذَا وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ ، فَهُنَالِكَ حِينَ رَجَعُوا إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ وَقَالُوا : يَا قَوْمَنَا إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ وَلَنْ نُشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَا أَحَدًا ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ سورة الجن آية 1 وَإِنَّمَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْهِ قَوْلُ الْجِنِّ .

ہم سے مسدد بن مسرہد نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم سے ابوعوانہ وضاح یشکری نے ابوبشر سے بیان کیا، انہوں نے سعید بن جبیر سے، انہوں نے عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے، انہوں نے کہا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ایک مرتبہ چند صحابہ رضی اللہ عنہم کے ساتھ عکاظ کے بازار کی طرف گئے۔ ان دنوں شیاطین کو آسمان کی خبریں لینے سے روک دیا گیا تھا اور ان پر انگارے ( شہاب ثاقب ) پھینکے جانے لگے تھے۔ تو وہ شیاطین اپنی قوم کے پاس آئے اور پوچھا کہ بات کیا ہوئی۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ ہمیں آسمان کی خبریں لینے سے روک دیا گیا ہے اور ( جب ہم آسمان کی طرف جاتے ہیں تو ) ہم پر شہاب ثاقب پھینکے جاتے ہیں۔ شیاطین نے کہا کہ آسمان کی خبریں لینے سے روکنے کی کوئی نئی وجہ ہوئی ہے۔ اس لیے تم مشرق و مغرب میں ہر طرف پھیل جاؤ اور اس سبب کو معلوم کرو جو تمہیں آسمان کی خبریں لینے سے روکنے کا سبب ہوا ہے۔ وجہ معلوم کرنے کے لیے نکلے ہوئے شیاطین تہامہ کی طرف گئے جہاں نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم عکاظ کے بازار کو جاتے ہوئے مقام نخلہ میں اپنے اصحاب کے ساتھ نماز فجر پڑھ رہے تھے۔ جب قرآن مجید انہوں نے سنا تو غور سے اس کی طرف کان لگا دئیے۔ پھر کہا، اللہ کی قسم! یہی ہے جو آسمان کی خبریں سننے سے روکنے کا باعث بنا ہے۔ پھر وہ اپنی قوم کی طرف لوٹے اور کہا قوم کے لوگو! ہم نے حیرت انگیز قرآن سنا جو سیدھے راستے کی طرف ہدایت کرتا ہے۔ اس لیے ہم اس پر ایمان لاتے ہیں اور اپنے رب کے ساتھ کسی کو شریک نہیں ٹھہراتے۔ اس پر نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پر یہ آیت نازل ہوئی «قل أوحي إلى‏» ( آپ کہیئے کہ مجھے وحی کے ذریعہ بتایا گیا ہے ) اور آپ پر جنوں کی گفتگو وحی کی گئی تھی۔

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet recited aloud in the prayers in which he was ordered to do so and quietly in the prayers in which he was ordered to do so. And your Lord is not forgetful. Verily there was a good example for you in the ways of the Prophet.

Narrated Abu Wa'il: A man came to Ibn Mas`ud and said, I recited the Mufassal (Suras) at night in one rak`a. Ibn Mas`ud said, This recitation is (too quick) like the recitation of poetry. I know the identical Suras which the Prophet used to recite in pairs. Ibn Mas`ud then mentioned 20 Mufassal Suras including two Suras from the family of (i.e. those verses which begin with) Ha, Meem [??] (which the Prophet used to recite) in each rak`a.

Narrated `Abdullah bin Abi Qatada: My father said, The Prophet uses to recite Al-Fatiha followed by another Sura in the first two rak`at of the prayer and used to recite only Al-Fatiha in the last two rak`at of the Zuhr prayer. Sometimes a verse or so was audible and he used to prolong the first rak`a more than the second and used to do the same in the `Asr and Fajr prayers.

Narrated Abu Ma`mar: We said to Khabbab Did Allah's Apostle used to recite in Zuhr and `Asr prayers? He replied in the affirmative. We said, How did you come to know about it? He said, By the movement of his beard.
