Narrated 'Ata: One night the Prophet delayed the `Isha' prayer whereupon `Umar went to him and said, The prayer, O Allah's Apostle! The women and children had slept. The Prophet came out with water dropping from his head, and said, Were I not afraid that it would be hard for my followers (or for the people), I would order them to pray `Isha prayer at this time. (Various versions of this Hadith are given by the narrators with slight differences in expression but not in content).

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيٌّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، قَالَ عَمْرٌو ، حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءٌ ، قَالَ : أَعْتَمَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْعِشَاءِ ، فَخَرَجَ عُمَرُ ، فَقَالَ : الصَّلَاةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، رَقَدَ النِّسَاءُ وَالصِّبْيَانُ ، فَخَرَجَ وَرَأْسُهُ يَقْطُرُ ، يَقُولُ : لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي أَوْ عَلَى النَّاسِ ، وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ أَيْضًا : عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالصَّلَاةِ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ ، قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَخَّرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ ، فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، رَقَدَ النِّسَاءُ وَالْوِلْدَانُ ، فَخَرَجَ وَهُوَ يَمْسَحُ الْمَاءَ عَنْ شِقِّهِ ، يَقُولُ : إِنَّهُ لَلْوَقْتُ لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، وَقَالَ عَمْرٌو ، حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءٌ ، لَيْسَ فِيهِ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَمَّا عَمْرٌو ، فَقَال : رَأْسُهُ يَقْطُرُ ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ : يَمْسَحُ الْمَاءَ عَنْ شِقِّهِ ، وَقَالَ عَمْرٌو : لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ : إِنَّهُ لَلْوَقْتُ لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، وَقَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْنٌ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .

ہم سے علی بن عبداللہ مدینی نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے سفیان بن عیینہ نے کہ عمرو بن دینار نے کہا، ہم سے عطاء بن ابی رباح نے بیان کیا کہ ایک رات ایسا ہوا نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے عشاء کی نماز میں دیر کی۔ آخر عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نکلے اور کہنے لگے یا رسول اللہ! نماز پڑھئے عورتیں اور بچے سونے لگے۔ اس وقت آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ( حجرے سے ) برآمد ہوئے آپ کے سر سے پانی ٹپک رہا تھا ( غسل کر کے باہر تشریف لائے ) فرمانے لگے اگر میری امت پر یا یوں فرمایا کہ لوگوں پر دشوار نہ ہوتا۔ سفیان بن عیینہ نے یوں کہا کہ میری امت پر دشوار نہ ہوتا تو میں اس وقت ( اتنی رات گئے ) ان کو یہ نماز پڑھنے کا حکم دیتا۔ اور ابن جریج نے ( اسی سند سے سفیان سے، انہوں نے ( ابن جریج سے ) انہوں نے عطاء سے روایت کی، انہوں نے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اس نماز ( یعنی عشاء کی نماز میں دیر کی۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ آئے اور کہنے لگے یا رسول اللہ! عورتیں بچے سو گئے۔ یہ سن کر آپ باہر تشریف لائے، اپنے سر کی ایک جانب سے پانی پونچھ رہے تھے، فرما رہے تھے اس نماز کا ( عمدہ ) وقت یہی ہے اگر میری امت پر شاق نہ ہو۔ عمرو بن دینار نے اس حدیث میں یوں نقل کیا۔ ہم سے عطاء نے بیان کیا اور ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کا ذکر نہیں کیا لیکن عمرو نے یوں کہا آپ کے سر سے پانی ٹپک رہا تھا۔ اور ابن جریج کی روایت میں یوں ہے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سر کے ایک جانب سے پانی پونچھ رہے تھے۔ اور عمرو نے کہا آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ اگر میری امت پر شاق نہ ہوتا۔ اور ابن جریج نے کہا آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ اگر میری امت پر شاق نہ ہوتا تو اس نماز کا ( افضل ) وقت تو یہی ہے۔ اور ابراہیم بن المنذر ( امام بخاری رحمہ اللہ کے شیخ ) نے کہا ہم سے معن بن عیسیٰ نے بیان کیا، کہا مجھ سے محمد بن مسلم نے، انہوں نے عمرو بن دینار سے، انہوں نے عطاء بن ابی رباح سے، انہوں نے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے، انہوں نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے پھر یہی حدیث نقل کی۔

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, Were I not afraid that it would be hard on my followers, I would order them to use the siwak (as obligatory, for cleaning the teeth).

Narrated Anas: The Prophet fasted Al-Wisal on the last days of the month. Some people did the same, and when the news reached the Prophet he said, If the month had been prolonged for me, then I would have fasted Wisal for such a long time that the most exaggerating ones among you would have given up their exaggeration. I am not like you; my Lord always makes me eat and drink.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle forbade Al-Wisal. The people said (to him), But you fast Al-`Wisal, He said, Who among you is like me? When I sleep (at night), my Lord makes me eat and drink. But when the people refused to give up Al-Wisal, he fasted Al-Wisal along with them for two days and then they saw the crescent whereupon the Prophet said, If the crescent had not appeared I would have fasted for a longer period, as if he intended to punish them herewith.

Narrated `Aisha: I asked the Prophet about the wall (outside the Ka`ba). Is it regarded as part of the Ka`ba? He replied, Yes. I said, Then why didn't the people include it in the Ka`ba? He said, (Because) your people ran short of money. I asked, Then why is its gate so high? He replied, ''Your people did so in order to admit to it whom they would and forbid whom they would. Were your people not still close to the period of ignorance, and were I not afraid that their hearts might deny my action, then surely I would include the wall in the Ka`ba and make its gate touch the ground.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, But for the emigration, I would have been one of the Ansar: and if the people took their way in a valley (or a mountain pass), I would take the Ansar's valley or the mountain pass.
