Narrated Anas: The people started asking the Prophet too many questions importunately. So one day he ascended the pulpit and said, You will not ask me any question but I will explain it to you. I looked right and left, and behold, every man was covering his head with his garment and weeping. Then got up a man who, whenever quarreling with somebody, used to be accused of not being the son of his father. He said, O Allah's Apostle! Who is my father? The Prophet replied, Your father is Hudhaifa. Then `Umar got up and said, We accept Allah as our Lord, Islam as our religion and Muhammad as our Apostle and we seek refuge with Allah from the evil of afflictions. The Prophet said, I have never seen the good and bad like on this day. No doubt, Paradise and Hell was displayed in front of me till I saw them in front of that wall, Qatada said: This Hadith used to be mentioned as an explanation of this Verse:-- 'O you who believe! Ask not questions about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble.' (5.101)

حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : سَأَلُوا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى أَحْفَوْهُ بِالْمَسْأَلَةِ ، فَصَعِدَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ الْمِنْبَرَ ، فَقَالَ : لَا تَسْأَلُونِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا بَيَّنْتُ لَكُمْ ، فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا ، فَإِذَا كُلُّ رَجُلٍ لَافٌّ رَأْسَهُ فِي ثَوْبِهِ يَبْكِي ، فَأَنْشَأَ رَجُلٌ كَانَ إِذَا لَاحَى يُدْعَى إِلَى غَيْرِ أَبِيهِ ، فَقَالَ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، مَنْ أَبِي ، فَقَالَ : أَبُوكَ حُذَافَةُ ، ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ عُمَرُ ، فَقَالَ : رَضِينَا بِاللَّهِ رَبًّا ، وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا ، وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولًا ، نَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ سُوءِ الْفِتَنِ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَا رَأَيْتُ فِي الْخَيْرِ وَالشَّرِّ كَالْيَوْمِ قَطُّ ، إِنَّهُ صُوِّرَتْ لِي الْجَنَّةُ وَالنَّارُ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُهُمَا دُونَ الْحَائِطِ ، فَكَانَ قَتَادَةُ يَذْكُرُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عِنْدَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ : يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَسْأَلُوا عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ سورة المائدة آية 101 .

ہم سے معاذ بن فضالہ نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے ہشام نے بیان کیا، ان سے قتادہ نے اور ان سے انس رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے لوگوں سے سوالات کئے آخر جب لوگ باربار سوال کرنے لگے تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم منبر پر ایک دن چڑھے اور فرمایا کہ آج تم مجھ سے جو سوال بھی کرو گے میں تمہیں اس کا جواب دوں گا۔ انس رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ پھر میں دائیں بائیں دیکھنے لگا تو ہر شخص کا سر اس کے کپڑے میں چھپا ہوا تھا اور وہ رو رہا تھا۔ آخر ایک شخص نے خاموشی توڑی۔ اس کا جب کسی سے جھگڑا ہوتا تو انہیں ان کے باپ کے سوا دوسرے باپ کی طرف پکارا جاتا۔ انہوں نے کہا: یا رسول اللہ! میرے والد کون ہیں؟ فرمایا تمہارے والد حذافہ ہیں۔ پھر عمر رضی اللہ عنہ سامنے آئے اور عرض کیا ہم اللہ سے کہ وہ رب ہے، اسلام سے کہ وہ دین ہے، محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے کہ وہ رسول ہیں راضی ہیں اور آزمائش کی برائی سے ہم اللہ کی پناہ مانگتے ہیں۔ پھر نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ میں نے خیر و شر آج جیسا دیکھا، کبھی نہیں دیکھا تھا۔ میرے سامنے جنت و دوزخ کی صورت پیش کی گئی اور میں نے انہیں دیوار کے قریب دیکھا۔ قتادہ نے بیان کیا کہ یہ بات اس آیت کے ساتھ ذکر کی جاتی ہے «يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تسألوا عن أشياء إن تبد لكم تسؤكم‏» کہ ”اے لوگو! جو ایمان لائے ہو ایسی چیزوں کے بارے میں سوال نہ کرو اگر وہ ظاہر کر دی جائیں تو تمہیں بری معلوم ہوں۔“

The the above hadith was narrated by Anas through another chain and said (with the wording) and every man had his head wrapped in his garment and weeping . And he said (with the wording) seeking refuge with Allah from the evil of afflictions or he said I seek refuge with Allah from the evil of afflictions.

Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet said, O Allah! Bestow Your blessings on our Sham! O Allah! Bestow Your blessings on our Yemen. The People said, And also on our Najd. He said, O Allah! Bestow Your blessings on our Sham (north)! O Allah! Bestow Your blessings on our Yemen. The people said, O Allah's Apostle! And also on our Najd. I think the third time the Prophet said, There (in Najd) is the place of earthquakes and afflictions and from there comes out the side of the head of Satan.

Narrated Sa`id bin Jubair: `Abdullah bin `Umar came to us and we hoped that he would narrate to us a good Hadith. But before we asked him, a man got up and said to him, O Abu `Abdur-Rahman! Narrate to us about the battles during the time of the afflictions, as Allah says:-- 'And fight them until there is no more afflictions (i.e. no more worshipping of others besides Allah).' (2.193) Ibn `Umar said (to the man), Do you know what is meant by afflictions? Let your mother bereave you! Muhammad used to fight against the pagans, for a Muslim was put to trial in his religion (The pagans will either kill him or chain him as a captive). His fighting was not like your fighting which is carried on for the sake of ruling.
