Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah Al-Ansari: Once a man was driving two Nadihas (camels used for agricultural purposes) and night had fallen. He found Mu`adh praying so he made his camel kneel and joined Mu`adh in the prayer. The latter recited Surat 'Al-Baqara or Surat An-Nisa , (so) the man left the prayer and went away. When he came to know that Mu`adh had criticized him, he went to the Prophet, and complained against Mu`adh. The Prophet said thrice, O Mu`adh ! Are you putting the people to trial? It would have been better if you had recited Sabbih Isma Rabbika-l-A`la (87) , Wash-shamsi wa duhaha (91) , or Wal-laili idha yaghsha (92) , for the old, the weak and the needy pray behind you. Jabir said that Mu`adh recited Sura Al-Baqara in the `Isha' prayer.

حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَارِبُ بْنُ دِثَارٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ ، قَالَ : أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ بِنَاضِحَيْنِ وَقَدْ جَنَحَ اللَّيْلُ ، فَوَافَقَ مُعَاذًا يُصَلِّي ، فَتَرَكَ نَاضِحَهُ وَأَقْبَلَ إِلَى مُعَاذٍ فَقَرَأَ بِسُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ أَوْ النِّسَاءِ ، فَانْطَلَقَ الرَّجُلُ وَبَلَغَهُ أَنَّ مُعَاذًا نَالَ مِنْهُ ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ مُعَاذًا ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا مُعَاذُ ، أَفَتَّانٌ أَنْتَ أَوْ أَفَاتِنٌ ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ ، فَلَوْلَا صَلَّيْتَ بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى فَإِنَّهُ يُصَلِّي وَرَاءَكَ الْكَبِيرُ وَالضَّعِيفُ وَذُو الْحَاجَةِ أَحْسِبُ هَذَا فِي الْحَدِيثِ ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد اللَّهِ : وَتَابَعَهُ سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَسْرُوقٍ ، وَمِسْعَرٌ ، وَالشَّيْبَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : عَمْرٌو ، وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مِقْسَمٍ ، وَأَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَرَأَ مُعَاذٌ فِي الْعِشَاءِ بِالْبَقَرَةِ ، وَتَابَعَهُ الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ مُحَارِبٍ .

ہم سے آدم بن ابی ایاس نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے شعبہ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے محارب بن دثار نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ میں نے جابر بن عبداللہ انصاری سے سنا، آپ نے بتلایا کہ ایک شخص پانی اٹھانے والا دو اونٹ لیے ہوئے آیا، رات تاریک ہو چکی تھی۔ اس نے معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ کو نماز پڑھاتے ہوئے پایا۔ اس لیے اپنے اونٹوں کو بٹھا کر ( نماز میں شریک ہونے کے لیے ) معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ کی طرف بڑھا۔ معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ نے نماز میں سورۃ البقرہ یا سورۃ نساء شروع کی۔ چنانچہ وہ شخص نیت توڑ کر چل دیا۔ پھر اسے معلوم ہوا کہ معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ نے مجھ کو برا بھلا کہا ہے۔ اس لیے وہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا اور معاذ کی شکایت کی، نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اس سے فرمایا، معاذ! کیا تم لوگوں کو فتنہ میں ڈالتے ہو۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے تین مرتبہ ( «فتان» یا «فاتن» ) فرمایا: «سبح اسم ربك،‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ والشمس وضحاها،‏‏‏‏ ‏‏‏‏ والليل إذا يغشى» ( سورتیں ) تم نے کیوں نہ پڑھیں، کیونکہ تمہارے پیچھے بوڑھے، کمزور اور حاجت مند نماز پڑھتے ہیں۔ شعبہ نے کہا کہ میرا خیال ہے کہ یہ آخری جملہ ( کیونکہ تمہارے پیچھے الخ ) حدیث میں داخل ہے۔ شعبہ کے ساتھ اس کی متابعت سعید بن مسروق، مسعر اور شیبانی نے کی ہے اور عمرو بن دینار، عبیداللہ بن مقسم اور ابوالزبیر نے بھی اس حدیث کو جابر کے واسطہ سے بیان کیا ہے کہ معاذ نے عشاء میں سورۃ البقرہ پڑھی تھی اور شعبہ کے ساتھ اس روایت کی متابعت اعمش نے محارب کے واسطہ سے کی ہے۔
