Narrated Zaid bin Thabit Al-Ansari: who was one of those who used to write the Divine Revelation: Abu Bakr sent for me after the (heavy) casualties among the warriors (of the battle) of Yamama (where a great number of Qurra' were killed). `Umar was present with Abu Bakr who said, `Umar has come to me and said, The people have suffered heavy casualties on the day of (the battle of) Yamama, and I am afraid that there will be more casualties among the Qurra' (those who know the Qur'an by heart) at other battle-fields, whereby a large part of the Qur'an may be lost, unless you collect it. And I am of the opinion that you should collect the Qur'an. Abu Bakr added, I said to `Umar, 'How can I do something which Allah's Apostle has not done?' `Umar said (to me), 'By Allah, it is (really) a good thing.' So `Umar kept on pressing, trying to persuade me to accept his proposal, till Allah opened my bosom for it and I had the same opinion as `Umar. (Zaid bin Thabit added:) `Umar was sitting with him (Abu Bakr) and was not speaking. me). You are a wise young man and we do not suspect you (of telling lies or of forgetfulness): and you used to write the Divine Inspiration for Allah's Messenger . Therefore, look for the Qur'an and collect it (in one manuscript). By Allah, if he (Abu Bakr) had ordered me to shift one of the mountains (from its place) it would not have been harder for me than what he had ordered me concerning the collection of the Qur'an. I said to both of them, How dare you do a thing which the Prophet has not done? Abu Bakr said, By Allah, it is (really) a good thing. So I kept on arguing with him about it till Allah opened my bosom for that which He had opened the bosoms of Abu Bakr and `Umar. So I started locating Qur'anic material and collecting it from parchments, scapula, leaf-stalks of date palms and from the memories of men (who knew it by heart). I found with Khuza`ima two Verses of Surat-at-Tauba which I had not found with anybody else, (and they were):-- Verily there has come to you an Apostle (Muhammad) from amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty He (Muhammad) is ardently anxious over you (to be rightly guided) (9.128) The manuscript on which the Qur'an was collected, remained with Abu Bakr till Allah took him unto Him, and then with `Umar till Allah took him unto Him, and finally it remained with Hafsa, `Umar's daughter.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ السَّبَّاقِ ، أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ يَكْتُبُ الْوَحْيَ ، قَالَ : أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مَقْتَلَ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ ، وَعِنْدَهُ عُمَرُ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : إِنَّ عُمَرَ أَتَانِي ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ الْقَتْلَ قَدِ اسْتَحَرَّ يَوْمَ الْيَمَامَةِ بِالنَّاسِ ، وَإِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ يَسْتَحِرَّ الْقَتْلُ بِالْقُرَّاءِ فِي الْمَوَاطِنِ ، فَيَذْهَبَ كَثِيرٌ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ، إِلَّا أَنْ تَجْمَعُوهُ وَإِنِّي لَأَرَى أَنْ تَجْمَعَ الْقُرْآنَ ، قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : قُلْتُ لِعُمَرَ : كَيْفَ أَفْعَلُ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : هُوَ وَاللَّهِ خَيْرٌ ، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ عُمَرُ يُرَاجِعُنِي فِيهِ حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللَّهُ لِذَلِكَ صَدْرِي ، وَرَأَيْتُ الَّذِي رَأَى عُمَرُ ، قَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ : وَعُمَرُ عِنْدَهُ جَالِسٌ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : إِنَّكَ رَجُلٌ شَابٌّ عَاقِلٌ ، وَلَا نَتَّهِمُكَ ، كُنْتَ تَكْتُبُ الْوَحْيَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتَتَبَّعِ الْقُرْآنَ ، فَاجْمَعْهُ ، فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْ كَلَّفَنِي نَقْلَ جَبَلٍ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ مَا كَانَ أَثْقَلَ عَلَيَّ مِمَّا أَمَرَنِي بِهِ مِنْ جَمْعِ الْقُرْآنِ ، قُلْتُ : كَيْفَ تَفْعَلَانِ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : هُوَ وَاللَّهِ خَيْرٌ ، فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أُرَاجِعُهُ حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرِي لِلَّذِي شَرَحَ اللَّهُ لَهُ صَدْرَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَ عُمَرَ ، فَقُمْتُ فَتَتَبَّعْتُ الْقُرْآنَ أَجْمَعُهُ مِنَ الرِّقَاعِ ، وَالْأَكْتَافِ ، وَالْعُسُبِ ، وَصُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ ، حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ مِنْ سُورَةِ التَّوْبَةِ آيَتَيْنِ مَعَ خُزَيْمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ لَمْ أَجِدْهُمَا مَعَ أَحَدٍ غَيْرِهِ ، لَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُمْ سورة التوبة آية 128 إِلَى آخِرِهِمَا ، وَكَانَتِ الصُّحُفُ الَّتِي جُمِعَ فِيهَا الْقُرْآنُ عِنْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ ، ثُمَّ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ ، ثُمَّ عِنْدَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ . تَابَعَهُ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ وَاللَّيْثُ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، وَقَالَ اللَّيْثُ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، وَقَالَ : مَعَ أَبِي خُزَيْمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ، وَقَالَ مُوسَى ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ ، مَعَ أَبِي خُزَيْمَةَ ، وَتَابَعَهُ يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، وَقَالَ أَبُو ثَابِتٍ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ ، وَقَالَ : مَعَ خُزَيْمَةَ ، أَوْ أَبِي خُزَيْمَةَ .

ہم سے ابوالیمان نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم کو شعیب نے خبر دی، ان سے زہری نے بیان کیا، کہا مجھے عبیداللہ بن سباق نے خبر دی اور ان سے زید بن ثابت انصاری رضی اللہ عنہ نے جو کاتب وحی تھے، بیان کیا کہ جب ( 11 ھ ) میں یمامہ کی لڑائی میں ( جو مسلیمہ کذاب سے ہوئی تھی ) بہت سے صحابہ مارے گئے تو ابوبکر صدیق رضی اللہ عنہ نے مجھے بلایا، ان کے پاس عمر رضی اللہ عنہ بھی موجود تھے۔ انہوں نے مجھ سے کہا، عمر رضی اللہ عنہ میرے پاس آئے اور کہا کہ جنگ یمامہ میں بہت زیادہ مسلمان شہید ہو گئے ہیں اور مجھے خطرہ ہے کہ ( کفار کے ساتھ ) لڑائیوں میں یونہی قرآن کے علماء اور قاری شہید ہوں گے اور اس طرح بہت سا قرآن ضائع ہو جائے گا۔ اب تو ایک ہی صورت ہے کہ آپ قرآن کو ایک جگہ جمع کرا دیں اور میری رائے تو یہ ہے کہ آپ ضرور قرآن کو جمع کرا دیں۔ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اس پر میں نے عمر رضی اللہ عنہ سے کہا، ایسا کام میں کس طرح کر سکتا ہوں جو خود رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے نہیں کیا تھا۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا، اللہ کی قسم! یہ تو محض ایک نیک کام ہے۔ اس کے بعد عمر رضی اللہ عنہ مجھ سے اس معاملہ پر بات کرتے رہے اور آخر میں اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس خدمت کے لیے میرا بھی سینہ کھول دیا اور میری بھی رائے وہی ہو گئی جو عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کی تھی۔ زید بن ثابت رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ وہیں خاموش بیٹھے ہوئے تھے۔ پھر ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: تم جوان اور سمجھدار ہو ہمیں تم پر کسی قسم کا شبہ بھی نہیں اور تم نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی وحی لکھا بھی کرتے تھے، اس لیے تم ہی قرآن مجید کو جابجا سے تلاش کر کے اسے جمع کر دو۔ اللہ کی قسم! کہ اگر ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ مجھ سے کوئی پہاڑ اٹھا کے لے جانے کے لیے کہتے تو یہ میرے لیے اتنا بھاری نہیں تھا جتنا قرآن کی ترتیب کا حکم۔ میں نے عرض کیا آپ لوگ ایک ایسے کام کے کرنے پر کس طرح آمادہ ہو گئے، جسے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے نہیں کیا تھا تو ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! یہ ایک نیک کام ہے۔ پھر میں ان سے اس مسئلہ پر گفتگو کرتا رہا، یہاں تک کہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس خدمت کے لیے میرا بھی سینہ کھول دیا۔ جس طرح ابوبکر و عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کا سینہ کھولا تھا۔ چنانچہ میں اٹھا اور میں نے کھال، ہڈی اور کھجور کی شاخوں سے ( جن پر قرآن مجید لکھا ہوا تھا، اس دور کے رواج کے مطابق ) قرآن مجید کو جمع کرنا شروع کر دیا اور لوگوں کے ( جو قرآن کے حافظ تھے ) حافظہ سے بھی مدد لی اور سورۃ التوبہ کی دو آیتیں خزیمہ انصاری رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس مجھے ملیں۔ ان کے علاوہ کسی کے پاس مجھے نہیں ملی تھی۔ ( وہ آیتیں یہ تھیں ) «لقد جاءكم رسول من أنفسكم عزيز عليه ما عنتم حريص عليكم‏» آخر تک۔ پھر مصحف جس میں قرآن مجید جمع کیا گیا تھا، ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس رہا، آپ کی وفات کے بعد عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس محفوظ رہا، پھر آپ کی وفات کے بعد آپ کی صاحبزادی ( ام المؤمنین حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہا کے پاس محفوظ رہا ) ۔ شعیب کے ساتھ اس حدیث کو عثمان بن عمر اور لیث بن سعد نے بھی یونس سے، انہوں نے ابن شہاب سے روایت کیا، اور لیث نے کہا مجھ سے عبدالرحمٰن بن خالد نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے ابن شہاب سے روایت کیا اس میں خزیمہ کے بدلے ابوخزیمہ انصاری ہے اور موسیٰ نے ابراہیم سے روایت کی، کہا ہم سے ابن شہاب نے بیان کیا، اس روایت میں بھی ابوخزیمہ ہے۔ موسیٰ بن اسماعیل کے ساتھ اس حدیث کو یعقوب بن ابراہیم نے بھی اپنے والد ابراہیم بن سعد سے روایت کیا اور ابوثابت محمد بن عبیداللہ مدنی نے، کہا ہم سے ابراہیم نے بیان کیا اس روایت میں شک کے ساتھ خزیمہ یا ابوخزیمہ مذکور ہے۔

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When the Prophet arrived at Medina, the Jews were observing the fast on 'Ashura' (10th of Muharram) and they said, This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh, On that, the Prophet said to his companions, You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses' victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day.

Narrated Muhammad bin `Abbas bin Ja`far: That he heard Ibn `Abbas reciting: No doubt! They fold up their breasts. (11.5) and asked him about its explanation. He said, Some people used to hide themselves while answering the call of nature in an open space lest they be exposed to the sky, and also when they had sexual relation with their wives in an open space lest they be exposed to the sky, so the above revelation was sent down regarding them.

Narrated Muhammad bin `Abbas bin Ja`far: Ibn `Abbas recited. No doubt! They fold up their breasts. I said, O Abu `Abbas! What is meant by They fold up their breasts? He said, A man used to feel shy on having sexual relation with his wife or on answering the call of nature (in an open space) so this Verse was revealed:-- No doubt! They fold up their breasts.

Narrated `Amr: Ibn `Abbas recited:-- No doubt! They fold up their breasts in order to hide from Him. Surely! Even when they cover themselves with their garments.. (11.5)

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, Allah said, 'Spend (O man), and I shall spend on you. He also said, Allah's Hand is full, and (its fullness) is not affected by the continuous spending night and day. He also said, Do you see what He has spent since He created the Heavens and the Earth? Nevertheless, what is in His Hand is not decreased, and His Throne was over the water; and in His Hand there is the balance (of justice) whereby He raises and lowers (people).

Narrated Safwan bin Muhriz: While Ibn `Umar was performing the Tawaf (around the Ka`ba), a man came up to him and said, O Abu `AbdurRahman! or said, O Ibn `Umar! Did you hear anything from the Prophet about An35 Najwa? Ibn `Umar said, I heard the Prophet saying, 'The Believer will be brought near his Lord. (Hisham, a sub-narrator said, reporting the Prophet's words), The believer will come near (his Lord) till his Lord covers him with His screen and makes him confess his sins. (Allah will ask him), 'Do you know (that you did) 'such-and-such sin? He will say twice, 'Yes, I do.' Then Allah will say, 'I concealed it in the world and I forgive it for you today.' Then the record of his good deeds will be folded up. As for the others, or the disbelievers, it will be announced publicly before the witnesses: 'These are ones who lied against their Lord.
