Narrated Ubaid bin Umair: Once `Umar (bin Al-Khattab) said to the companions of the Prophet What do you think about this Verse:-- Does any of you wish that he should have a garden? They replied, Allah knows best. `Umar became angry and said, Either say that you know or say that you do not know! On that Ibn `Abbas said, O chief of the believers! I have something in my mind to say about it. `Umar said, O son of my brother! Say, and do not under estimate yourself. Ibn `Abbas said, This Verse has been set up as an example for deeds. `Umar said, What kind of deeds? Ibn `Abbas said, For deeds. `Umar said, This is an example for a rich man who does goods out of obedience of Allah and then Allah sends him Satan whereupon he commits sins till all his good deeds are lost.

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ , أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ , عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ , سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : وَسَمِعْتُ أَخَاهُ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ يُحَدِّثُ , عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ , قَالَ : قَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : يَوْمًا لِأَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فِيمَ تَرَوْنَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ نَزَلَتْ أَيَوَدُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ تَكُونَ لَهُ جَنَّةٌ سورة البقرة آية 266 ؟ قَالُوا : اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ ، فَغَضِبَ عُمَرُ , فَقَالَ : قُولُوا : نَعْلَمُ أَوْ لَا نَعْلَمُ , فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : فِي نَفْسِي مِنْهَا شَيْءٌ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ , قَالَ عُمَرُ : يَا ابْنَ أَخِي قُلْ وَلَا تَحْقِرْ نَفْسَكَ , قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : ضُرِبَتْ مَثَلًا لِعَمَلٍ ، قَالَ عُمَرُ : أَيُّ عَمَلٍ ، قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : لِعَمَلٍ , قَالَ عُمَرُ : لِرَجُلٍ غَنِيٍّ يَعْمَلُ بِطَاعَةِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، ثُمَّ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ لَهُ الشَّيْطَانَ ، فَعَمِلَ بِالْمَعَاصِي حَتَّى أَغْرَقَ أَعْمَالَهُ .

ہم سے ابراہیم بن موسیٰ نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم کو ہشام نے خبر دی، انہیں ابن جریج نے، انہوں نے عبداللہ بن ابی ملیکہ سے سنا، وہ عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے بیان کرتے تھے، ابن جریج نے کہا اور میں نے ابن ابی ملیکہ کے بھائی ابوبکر بن ابی ملیکہ سے بھی سنا، وہ عبید بن عمیر سے روایت کرتے تھے کہ ایک دن عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے اصحاب سے دریافت کیا کہ آپ لوگ جانتے ہو یہ آیت کس سلسلے میں نازل ہوئی ہے «أيود أحدكم أن تكون له جنة‏» ”کیا تم میں سے کوئی یہ پسند کرتا ہے کہ اس کا ایک باغ ہو۔“ سب نے کہا کہ اللہ زیادہ جاننے والا ہے۔ یہ سن کر عمر رضی اللہ عنہ بہت خفا ہو گئے اور کہا، صاف جواب دیں کہ آپ لوگوں کو اس سلسلے میں کچھ معلوم ہے یا نہیں۔ ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے عرض کیا: امیرالمؤمنین! میرے دل میں ایک بات آتی ہے۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے فرمایا: بیٹے! تمہیں کہو اور اپنے کو حقیر نہ سمجھو۔ ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے عرض کیا کہ اس میں عمل کی مثال بیان کی گئی ہے۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے پوچھا، کیسے عمل کی؟ ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے عرض کیا کہ عمل کی۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ یہ ایک مالدار شخص کی مثال ہے جو اللہ کی اطاعت میں نیک عمل کرتا رہتا ہے۔ پھر اللہ شیطان کو اس پر غالب کر دیتا ہے، وہ گناہوں میں مصروف ہو جاتا ہے اور اس کے اگلے نیک اعمال سب غارت ہو جاتے ہیں۔

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, The poor person is not the one for whom a date or two or a morsel or two (of food is sufficient but the poor person is he who does not (beg or) ask the people (for something) or show his poverty at all. Recite if you wish, (Allah's Statement): They do not beg of people at all. (2.273)
