Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Abu Bakr went out while `Umar bin Al-Khattab was talking to the people. Abu Bakr said, Sit down, O `Umar! But `Umar refused to sit down. So the people came to Abu Bakr and left `Umar. Abu Bakr said, To proceed, if anyone amongst you used to worship Muhammad , then Muhammad is dead, but if (anyone of) you used to worship Allah, then Allah is Alive and shall never die. Allah said:-- Muhammad is no more than an Apostle, and indeed (many) apostles have passed away before him..(till the end of the Verse )... Allah will reward to those who are thankful. (3.144) By Allah, it was as if the people never knew that Allah had revealed this Verse before till Abu Bakr recited it and all the people received it from him, and I heard everybody reciting it (then). Narrated Az-Zuhri: Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab told me that `Umar said, By Allah, when I heard Abu Bakr reciting it, my legs could not support me and I fell down at the very moment of hearing him reciting it, declaring that the Prophet had died.

قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ : وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ خَرَجَ وَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ يُكَلِّمُ النَّاسَ ، فَقَالَ : اجْلِسْ يَا عُمَرُ ، فَأَبَى عُمَرُ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ ، فَأَقْبَلَ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ وَتَرَكُوا عُمَرَ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : أَمَّا بَعْدُ ، فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ يَعْبُدُ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَإِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا قَدْ مَاتَ ، وَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ يَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ حَيٌّ لَا يَمُوتُ ، قَالَ اللَّهُ : وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ : الشَّاكِرِينَ سورة آل عمران آية 144 ، وَقَالَ : وَاللَّهِ لَكَأَنَّ النَّاسَ لَمْ يَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ أَنْزَلَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ حَتَّى تَلَاهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَتَلَقَّاهَا مِنْهُ النَّاسُ كُلُّهُمْ ، فَمَا أَسْمَعُ بَشَرًا مِنَ النَّاسِ إِلَّا يَتْلُوهَا ، فَأَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : وَاللَّهِ مَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَنْ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ تَلَاهَا فَعَقِرْتُ حَتَّى مَا تُقِلُّنِي رِجْلَايَ وَحَتَّى أَهْوَيْتُ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ حِينَ سَمِعْتُهُ تَلَاهَا ، عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ مَاتَ .

زہری نے بیان کیا اور ان سے ابوسلمہ نے بیان کیا، ان سے عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ آئے تو عمر رضی اللہ عنہ لوگوں سے کچھ کہہ رہے تھے۔ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: عمر! بیٹھ جاؤ، لیکن عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیٹھنے سے انکار کیا۔ اتنے میں لوگ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو چھوڑ کر ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس آ گئے اور آپ نے خطبہ مسنونہ کے بعد فرمایا: امابعد! تم میں جو بھی محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی عبادت کرتا تھا تو اسے معلوم ہونا چاہیے کہ آپ کی وفات ہو چکی ہے اور جو اللہ تعالیٰ کی عبادت کرتا تھا تو ( اس کا معبود ) اللہ ہمیشہ زندہ رہنے والا ہے اور اس کو کبھی موت نہیں آئے گی۔ اللہ تعالیٰ نے خود فرمایا ہے «وما محمد إلا رسول قد خلت من قبله الرسل‏» کہ ”محمد صرف رسول ہیں، ان سے پہلے بھی رسول گزر چکے ہیں۔“ ارشاد «الشاكرين‏» تک۔ ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا: اللہ کی قسم! ایسا محسوس ہوا کہ جیسے پہلے سے لوگوں کو معلوم ہی نہیں تھا کہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے یہ آیت نازل کی ہے اور جب ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے اس کی تلاوت کی تو سب نے ان سے یہ آیت سیکھی۔ اب یہ حال تھا کہ جو بھی سنتا تھا وہی اس کی تلاوت کرنے لگ جاتا تھا۔ ( زہری نے بیان کیا کہ ) پھر مجھے سعید بن مسیب نے خبر دی کہ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! مجھے اس وقت ہوش آیا، جب میں نے ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کو اس آیت کی تلاوت کرتے سنا، جس وقت میں نے انہیں تلاوت کرتے سنا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی وفات ہو گئی ہے تو میں سکتے میں آ گیا اور ایسا محسوس ہوا کہ میرے پاؤں میرا بوجھ نہیں اٹھا پائیں گے اور میں زمین پر گر جاؤں گا۔

Narrated `Aisha: We poured medicine in one side of the Prophet's mouth during his illness and he started pointing to us, meaning to say, Don't pour medicine in my mouth. We said, (He says so) because a patient dislikes medicines. When he improved and felt a little better, he said, Didn't I forbid you to pour medicine in my mouth ? We said, ( We thought it was because of) the dislike, patients have for medicines. He said, Let everyone present in the house be given medicine by pouring it in his mouth while I am looking at him, except `Abbas as he has not witnessed you (doing the same to me).

Narrated Al-Aswad: It was mentioned in the presence of `Aisha that the Prophet had appointed `Ali as successor by will. Thereupon she said, Who said so? I saw the Prophet, while I was supporting him against my chest. He asked for a tray, and then fell on one side and expired, and I did not feel it. So how (do the people say) he appointed `Ali as his successor?

Narrated Talha: I asked `Abdullah bin Abu `Aufa Did the Prophet make a will? ' He replied, No. I further asked, How comes it that the making of a will was enjoined on the people or that they were ordered to make it? He said, The Prophet made a will concerning Allah's Book.
